help - boost query on 997 turbo

Hi there, I recently picked up a 06 997 turbo with sport chrono and have a query.

When I switch to sport, should i see 1.2 bar as the max in the boost display (the bar version not digit). mine still shows 1.0 regardless.

Also should i see 1.0 bar all the time under full acceleration? it seems to only want to hit .5 or .6 most of the time.

Wondering if something is wrong.

I'm not sure if these boost bars a very accurate - I have a Gen-2 which supposedly maxes out at 1 bar with the sport button pressed but I rarely ever see it exceed 0.8 - 0.9 bar.

Maybe at very specific revs with a very specific throttle position it'll do it but the boost display seems to have mind of it's own.

I must ass that I have absolutely no technical knowledge of this subject at all so I've probably waffled a load of cr@p!

IIRC when it's overboosting it shows an arrow pointing upwards.

Try full throttle in 5th uphill and that will show 1.2bar almost certainly.

Correct, the arrow does show on overboost. Which makes me believe the boost gauge even less. Mine being a gen-2 has a normal maximum boost of 0.8 bar with an overboost of just 1 bar...yet when the arrow pops up it rarely goes above 0.8 (maybe 0.9 at a push).

I'll settle this argument in my head by changing the display from a bar to The digital readout and see if I can get hat to show the whole 1!

+1 just select 5th when you are doing 40ish on a clear road and bury your right foot, you should see somrthing close to 1.2 on the digital read out and the little arrow.....

also one other query. when i switch on the boost bar display, it shows units 0, 0.5 and 1.0 at the bottom of the bar. Should this change to a max of 1.2 when sport is selected (i mean the bar units not what the car is doing). Reason i ask is i have seen some you tube vid that shows a measure of 0,.6 and 1.2

mines a manual also.

Just checked mine on the way home and the bar display shows 0-0.6-1.2 regardless of whether the Sport Button is engaged........

that is odd as mine is 0, 0.5 and 1.0 regardless of the sport button. I wonder if the software changed at some point as mine is a very early 997t.

Searching for threads about this and it looks as good as any to resurrect!

No matter how I tried I couldn't get a reading above 1.0 bar in sport mode, and 0.8 in normal mode. I thought this was normal, but it appears from many other threads I should be seeing 1.0 in normal and 1.2 in sport (997 turbo).

I did low gear acceleration tests, 4th gear 2.5k rpm tests (all showing up arrow so sport definitely engaged) and numerous other ranges. At no time did they change from the readings above.

I had a passenger checking also, and 1.0 bar for a short period before dropping off (as it should) was the best I could manage.

Normal, or possibly a problem? Not a good day really as the CD changer throwing a wobbly also!

From personal experience, the boost gauge is not a great indicator of actual boost.

If you are concerned about boost loss you need to get it a specialist as there can be other factors at play, lower than expected boost is not always due to a mechanical or software fault.

I have a Gen2 and if i bury the throttle the car does not always display 1.0bar.

One of the mechanics on here will need to set the record straight about normal Gen1 boost levels as I don't know what they are. I would be surprised if its 1.2bar or over on a standard car!

My 997.2 Turbo S shows 1.2 boost and I've reached that

Standard 997 Turbo is around 0.8 in standard mode or 1.2 in Sport.

That's strange, as If I had a boost leak, I would assume it would affect normal and sport mode, but I see 0.8 in normal mode all the time, just not 1.2?

What is the boost in 'Sport Plus'?

I ask because I drove a 997 Turbo 'S' recently, which was quite amazing, but 'Sport Plus' seemed unbelievably quick.

Do you actually have Sport Chrono? Do you have the dash clock? The Sport button is fitted with or without Sport Chrono.

The Sport button allows overboost to 1.2 for 10 seconds in normal Turbo cars. The Turbo S doesn't have a time limit for the overboost function. Sport Plus is just a different map IIRC.

Yes, I mean sport chrono as have the clock.

Maybe get your car checked out then because my car (pre-map) was as the figures I quoted above (0.8/1.2).
