I'm thinking about buying one of these for my car, it's got classic generic looks so shouldn't detract from the looks of the dash and all the functionality of a modern device including Bluetooth. The only thing that bothers me a little is that it sits slightly proud of the dash to allow the flip up/down facility to access the media slots and that the background colour appears to be green, where I would prefer orange (maybe this can be switched over?).

Suitable for cars upto 996 with single DIN excl. 356.

Thanks, I didn't realise there was a thread already running.

I've looked at the thread on 911UK and I'm just not sure on the fact it sits proud of the dash.... scratchchin

I was quoted the same price fitted this afternoon by my local OPC.

911perv, how are you getting on with the aesthetics (what car is it installed in?) and can you change the background colour?

Its in a 993, I think it looks alot better than the Alpine it replaced, I'm well happy with the look, I havent bothered to play about with the display colour (if you even can?)

For me its done away with a 6 stack cd that jumped every 50 yards (PSS10 wound up to 7 & 9), the SD card holds 50 odd albums, sat nav is fine, bluetooth for the phone, and more space in the boot. I have no regets at all. So it doesnt fit flush into the dash but its thicker than a normal flip front unit

Surely the lack of iPod connectivity with rear mounted cable (so you avoid seeing it) is a major oversight from Porsche with the spec of this unit?

Maybe, but with the SD card would you really need it?

Thanks, that's very informative. smile

I agree too that by having 2 SD card's there's really no need for an ipod connectivity. I take it you can shuffle the contents of an SD card?

Yes, it has a random shuffle feature on it.

It doesnt take the new SDHC cards so its 2g max on a card, only one slot really as the other one is for the sat nav card

When you consider the Becker Mexico Retro, and then you look at this unit, I really think Porsche missed the boat in terms of design. It really wouldn't have been difficult to style something that worked with most Porsches pre-996 and still make it look excellent. As it stands, I think it resembles some cheap non-name unit you'd buy in Taiwan.

So I've been to look at the unit at my OPC and held the facia against my dash and it looks ok. smile

They're not sure it can be fitted to a 996 though, they put my car on their system and nothing definitive came out (interestingly their computer didn't know what gearbox my GT3 has hehe ) so theyre looking into this. Price of the unit is £590 Inc Vat but excluding fitment.

Perv, who fitted yours?

A local car audio guy, £50 cash, removed the old unit & cd stack, with the GPS antenna & mic it did take him about 3 hours (antenna under rear parcel shelf so you cant see it)

Does yours not have the alarm LED on the top of the dash?
My antenna was fitted under that cover.Would have saved him about an hr
Having said that, £50 for 3 hrs work is extremely cheap!

Tino,

Have you got this same unit fitted to a 996?

edited: Also the GPS unit will not fit under the Alarm LED I don't think. Looks too big.
