996 stereo upgrade options?

Not posted much here recently, but have now covered 13,000 very happy miles in my 996 and we're still going strong.

I know this has probably been asked before, but I'm looking at replacing the old CDR-22 system in mine now.

I want to upgrade the headunit, I think the speakers are fine (not brilliant, but they do the job). I'm after something which I can plug an ipod or iphone into, that will charge either and also has bluetooth for phone calls.

I specifically don't want one of the units that lights up like some kind of tacky Christmas display! Something that is sleek and simple and easy to operate.

Does anyone have any ideas? Also, any pictures of current setups would be brilliant as I'd like to get an idea of how the whole dash would look. It may be 'dated', but I quite like the minimalist 996 interior and would like something in keeping if that's possible.

What I'm trying to picture is not just how the headunit would look in-situ, but also how the iphone/pod would be held, so it's easy to access and operate.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hey, this is what I done on mine. Give us a shout if need more information. Quite a simple install with moving the climate control to the bottom.

I fitted a Kenwood KIV-700 to my turbo and have been very impressed by it. I struggled to find something without loads of flashy buttons, and this seems to suit the car well. It has a screen, but this doesn't look out of place.

It allows the button colours to be changed, so I've set them to orange to match the 996 colours - not a perfect match but not bad.

For Hands Free, you need to buy a different hands free module - in the states, Kenwood sell the KIV 900 which has hands free built in, but for some reason not here.

Note that it's CD-less. So apart from the radio, music must be digital - you can use Ipod, streaming via phone bluetooth or a USB stick. Navigation on the USB stick is excellent, unlike the Clarion I have in my other car.

I have the ipod cable running to the cubby in the centre console behind the handbrake, and the ipod is in there. I only started using an ipod when I was clearing out a draw and found my old 80GB ipod with a broken screen - but for the car, it's perfect.

It will also play videos - although apart from trying it once, I've never done it since.

Radio reception isn't the best - perfectly OK with main stations but not great on local stuff. I read a post from somebody suggesting that radio reception is much better without the hands free module for some reason, but don't know if that's true.

Why not just fit an iPod lead to your cdr22? Costs about £25 an is fitted in like 10 minutes? Keeps the standard Porsche head unit & works well-they don't charge modern iPhones or iPods mind you so it means buying a cheap iPod classic off eBay.

Porsche themselves are advertising a replacement unit for the 996 which appears to do what you want and more including touch screen nav. From the little I know it is for single DIN replacement and looks really uncluttered and more importantly will look standard. As for price I have no idea but certainly must be worth a look.

I looked at doing a double DIN conversion on mine but the whole MOST thing just got too complicated so I've stayed factory. I'm lucky enough to have PSE so tend to use that for music!

Not that difficult, just need some knowhow and a fair bit of time

My profile image has a Pioneer F900BT. A double DIN unit with bluetooth and Sat nav(just removed it to fit an alpine S900R)
For single DIN units, installation is easy, you just need to pick one to suit.

You run teh speaker cables from the stereo to the bose amp, but you eliminate the amp. You also get sa small amp to run the subs.
The front door and dash speakers have a 2ohm impedance, so you need to run these in series. The rear side speakers are easy 4 ohms.
The subs are in parallel, but something like 1ohm, so need to be rewired to run in series for the amp to cope(unless the amp is 1ohm stable)
As said, not hugely complicated, but a long winded process.

So the long story short is that, CDR-23 stopped reading the cd's and knew it never would again as had last one replaced under warrenty when it did it before.

Have purchased and installed a new Kenwood single din but no power is going to it.

Ive spoken to the shop that i got it from, who also do fitting, and theyve said that you just need to splice into a spare aux cable in the fuse board by the accelerator pedal and then splice into the red cable at the back of the stereo.

Now has anyone done this? Ive been quoted £120 to do the necessary works

Ive had a look and it doesnt appear i need another wiring loom/the compatible wiring loom thing so not that

Or do i just have a loose connection somewhere and should be able to sort it out myself?

You may prefer to use a CanBUS adapter (http://www.connects2.co.uk/products/can-bus-adapters/universal)
