Porsche 911

In the next month or so I am going to buy something sporty with the intention of keeping it for a year or two before selling it on. I am hoping that if I buy the right car at the right price I will not loose too much come resale time.

I have circa 10k to spend and like the Porsche 964. A friend brought an 'M' plate one when new (I think it was a Carerra 4). I had a quick look and these still seem to be priced at double my budget or more.

What are the targa's like? It seems you can pick up a 1990 ish one for around my budget.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I'd be a little wary of a 911 for 10k but then it's been years since I looked into them.

Why not get a nice TVR Chimaera?

If you're after a £10k 911, then a leggy 996 would be a better bet.

A 968 Porker would get my vote at that level if you want to go for a modern classic, or the ubiquitous Boxster, you should get a very nice example of either with that budget..maybe a 944 Turbo or a 928 S4 may be 'doable' as well..the 928s have great road presence

C3 or C4 Corvette or a e30 M3 BMW.

I wouldn't buy any 911 for £10k, it'd only cost you more than buying a £15k example from the off. You would, however, get a well sorted Boxster S for £10k. Definitely worth a try...

Thanks for the comments so far.

I have owned a couple Chimaeras and the only thing that puts me off is the reliability as I would be using it as a daily driver.
I know you could say the same about any car at this sort of age but I have also onwed Boxsters and TT's and the reliabilty has been better than the TVR's.

A nice Boxster could be a good option though.

I did view an 1989 Porsche 911 964 Targa in Red a year or so back. The reason I did not buy it was there were a few electrical niggles but it really looked good and was 9k.

Good call. I have just been looking at Porsche 996's, I did not know you could pick them up for about 12k.

Do they have a good reputation?

If not, good luck picking any 911 for GBP10k, even a targa! I wouldn't go close to any 911 at that price level.

An M-reg would be the next model on from the 964 - the 993 (which was introduced in 1993) and yes they go for about 20k.

You can find 964s for sale nearly around 10k, but these tend to be targas or convertibles which may well have been unloved. The Targa has a (possibly undeserved) reputation for leaks, and anyway 'everybody' wants a coupe (in both 964 and 993).

So if you want a depreciation-proof 911, find another few thousand and get a 964 coupe (circa 1989 - 1993) or find another 10k and get the 993 (1993 - 1997).

Did not want to sound harsh, but at £10k you are seriously running low for a 911, and possibly into a money pit...deep one. Poorly maintained cars will cost a bundle to put right. Fixing them can be very expensive: remember, no matter how old they are, they were top of their leagues cars back then, and very wealthy people bought and ran them
Running costs haven't gone down in price with age, but rather the opposite.

Better maintained cars will cost more initially...maybe you can save a couple more grands before jumping into a 911.

Note: check out how much has the owner of that car spent over the last 2.5 years...imagine how much it could cost you don't think because he's fixed all this, the cost of maintaining it in top shape cannot go further.
