HELP PLEASE - 997.1 C2S refusing to idle - cuts out :(
Discussion
Hi there
OK the short story is my 997.1 C2S is refusing to idle, it drops to 1000rpm, goes to to settle at 750rpm and it dips to 500rpm, goes to bounce up and just cuts out. I can keep the car running with light throttle but its a nightmare.
The long story the car this morning, drove to work without issue, got in car this evening to go gym from work and car again drove fine. Parked up in gym car park, again no issues at all.
Was in the gym for an hour, started car up, pulled off and when I came to stop it just cut out, so I just assumed I'd stalled it, started back up and it just cut back out again. So I drove started up and made sure to not come to an idle, driving wise the car seems fine, no flat spots, seems to have full power and throttle is very sharp. As soon as come to stop, idle drops and dips to 500rpm and stalls.
I've tried the following:-
1. Cleaning out the inlet/butterfly what the intake hose connects too, but it was pretty clean, hardly any gunk/oil in there, but now its shiny clean. This did not fix it.
2. So I've put the airbox completely back to stock, making sure everything is connected including the vacuum hose. Car still stalls.
3. Disconnected battery for 30 mins, re-connected, dash like a Christmas tree, PASM failure etc. but car still cuts out.
4. Removed oil cap and re-fitted, still stalls.
5. Tried sport button on / off, no difference.
I really can't think of anything else to do, big thanks to Mike at Sports and Classic for telling me to try the above but am now at a loss and even though the car seems to drive perfect, bar idling, I don't want to risk driving in rush hour as feel a right idiot when it just cuts out or having to sit their revving it in order to keep it goin.
Has anyone ever come across this before on a 997, if so what was the cause or how did you fix it?
Thanks
Gibbo

apart from the idle, is it running OK?
you know, pulling nicely, normal behaviour with engine braking when you are off the gas?
I've tried idling with throttle and holds revs and it holds any revs smoothly without issue.you know, pulling nicely, normal behaviour with engine braking when you are off the gas?
I've booted it and it pulls clean to 7000rpm, seems to drive fine. I've not tried engine braking though, but nothing seemed out of place.
Moment you put clutch in, or place the car in neutral it just cuts out, it just seems as it the car simply cannot sustain an idle.

Its come on all of a sudden, I've done 1100 miles since having car and its been fine, now all of a sudden today its cutting out at idle.

Hi there
Right just been out to car as its had a 2-3hrs to cool down.
Car started up and it idled fine, no issues at all. So I took the car for a drive and again the car drove as I'd say perfect. So I put car back on drive and its running fine, oil temperature is approx 85c.
So I leave running on the drive focusing on oil temperature guage, water temp and engine oil pressure.
Water temp is smack on 80c, never moves from this once warmed up.
Engine pressure with even low revs tends to be at 5 or above 4. At idle with oil temperature sub 90c engine pressure is around 2.5
The moment the oil temperature seemed to hit around 92c and engine oil pressure dipping under 2 this is where it just stalls.
Infact as the oil temperature hit 92c I felt a minor change in revs or as if something was kicking in and within this instant car stalled. I started back up and held the revs at 1000rpm and it was fine, moment foot of accelerator it stalls.
So basically the car is only having idle issues once fully warmed up and not when cold or under 90c oil temperature. Does this help point the finger as to whats wrong?
So my car is perfect, until its upto full operating temperature on oil at which point it just refuses to idle and cuts out.

I'd suggest one of the following:
MAF Sensor
O2 (Lambda) Sensor(s)
Air leak
Temperature Sensor
Cam Actuator
The only way to find out what's wrong is to get the car on a PIWIS tester at an OPC or on a Durametric analyser if anyone's got one locally. Either will pinpoint what's going on.
Big thumbs up too Mike from Sports and Classic in Knutsford, he dropped by this evenin with his computer and it showed an issue but hard to spot it, so he disconnected maf and all seemed well. So he then removed the MAF from his 996 GT3 and put it in mine and car is running fine again. Big thumbs up too him, he is gonna try to get me one ASAP. Just glad its as simple as MAF sensor, now to try and claim for it under the warranty. MAF Sensor
O2 (Lambda) Sensor(s)
Air leak

If not anyone got good sources for MAFS for the 997 C2S?

Hi,
Just checked the Euro car parts website,
Not listed for your 997, but as it is the same as my GT3 that one is listed at £203.00, I will check it out tomorrow if they are all not watching this wedding !

I have been experiencing a very similar issue on my Porsche 997.1 with 62K miles. I have replaced the throttle body control, all 4 O2 sensors, spark plugs, coils, cleaned the MAF sensor, and the problem went away for a a few weeks. Then it happened again, but this time the car revs erratically between 1000 and 1500 RPM. This happens after I have driven the car to normal operating temperature and stop (to go to a store for example) and start it again.
I replaced all those parts as they came faulty in Durametric test.
I took the car to the dealer desperate to find a solution and they have not been able to diagnose the issue. I have told them all the codes I got from the car at some point with Durametric and all the repairs I have done, they are trying to say the throttle body control is defective. No big deal, I have warranty on it, but I am sure that is not the problem. It makes me upset a Porsche dealer cannot diagnose the issue and on top of that they called me once to tell me they had it ready I came to pick it up and they charged me a few hours worth of work without me really approving the work and when they brought the car upfront the car was doing the exact same thing they supposedly fixed. SMH! I mean if we cannot trust a Porsche dealer with this cars who can we?
Seems to me whatever it is is only getting faulty after warm up. I might just replace the MAF all together and try it. Any help with any body else experiencing similar symptoms would be greatly appreciated.
