Red rose brake upgrade
Discussion
and another one...
since the brake discs on my recently acquired Tuscan Mk1 need replacing, I am wondering if i could upgrade the brakes to red rose spec. According to my current knowledge the front discs would grow from 291mm (2000 model year) to 322mm. As the front callipers used for the Tuscans are all the same (CP6600) I should only rquire a new spacer to move the calliper further away from the axle. The dish of both discs are the same?
Now what happesns at the rear? The callipers again should be the same as on the std. Tuscan but the rear callipers are tangentially screw fixed. Do the "S" or red rose rear callipers have different adaperts or different uprights? Can I get the required parts as spares (fronts are no problem, diy)?
Sorry if it all sounds stupid but I am still a newbie but try to change this with the help of the forum...

Hi
Can only help on the fronts, will have to look into the rears. Mine has been upgraded to 322mm discs at some stage. There are spacers you can buy from the well known vendors then you just need the discs for the fronts. Might also be worth getting some spacers for the wheels from SP. They are on ebay for £20'ish +P&P I think.
Are yours 2 piece or one piece discs?
This might help, if you need anything else just ask. There are some other threads if you search using the forum search.

OK, this confirms my estimations. It has single piece rotors fitted currently. I'll do the brake spacers for the 322s myself. The car already came with wheel spacers at the front. Did an alignment yesterday. Car had 2°(!) of toe in at the front axle and 0.7° of toe in at the rear axle. All threads of the bolts looked like not having been touched for years, so I guess the previous owners run the car like this. If this example is not just an exception, I can easily understand the compains you sometime hear about the road manners of the Tuscan but it is not at all the cars (and TVRs) fault. People just need to set it up properly.
The 6600 ones were the later fit with the eared pads. If you´ve got these then ignore the following.
The original calipers on ´00 cars with 291mm discs were CP5200. There were 2 sizes fitted, one that will take up to a 330mm disc and one that will only take up to 304mm. The internal radius of the caliper is different. The larger ones were fitted to 4.5 Cerbs, with the smaller ones on 4.2 Cerbs. Regarding Tuscans, the larger ones were on the RR variants but some std cars (mine included) have the larger radius calipers even though they had 291mm discs.
I´ve gone up to 322 discs on the front with 16mm spacers but you´ll need to check your calipers will take them.
I left the rears alone as the brake balance was rear biased originally. Upgrading the fronts has sorted it out.

aha, good information. Until now I was under the impression the front callipers were always the CP6600. Any way how I could figure which one is mounted on my car (part No) besides just giving it a try with the 322mm rotors? My car is indeed a 2000 year model, so chances are that I do not have the 6600 callipers on.
Maybe another question regarding the pads to use as brake bias was already mentioned. Running 322 discs front and std ones at the back, what sort of pads do you recomend? I have heard people made good experience with EBC red stuff and DS 2500, with the Mintex creating a lot of dust. I personally was very happy with the Ferrodos on two other cars. Which pads/pad combination front-rear works best and is not too hard on the discs too?

You can tell the caliper type from the shape.Check it against these:

Regarding the inside radius of the 5200 calipers, I cut a piece of card the correct radius to try it before buying the discs. I´m not sure how to tell from part numbers.
I have Ferodo DS2500 pads in mine. Much better than the original TVR Ferodo compound.
ETA I went through this same process when looking to upgrade mine originally.

...just realized, that on the AP page it even says that the max disc diamater for the CP5200 is as well 330 like for the CP6600. Checked it on the CP6600 before but did not read through the spec sheet you just send now. So in the end both callipers should be fine with the 322mm rotors, good news!

As I said before, there are 2 sizes of the 5200 though so you need to check which you have.Gassing Station | Tuscan | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
