Rear exhaust box cracked - repair / can options?
Discussion
Hi Gents,
Mate popped his head in the office earlier to tell me (with great pleasure) that one of my cans was hanging off the back of my car!
Well, the nearside box has cracked and split, so exhaust and clamp and box section came away with a good tug, was lucky not to have lost it! Its now in my boot!!
Anyone else has this failure?
So - been thinking through a few options. The cans are standard sleeved, and clearly this has made them heavier. I fear if i simply get it repaired (should repair ok - no rust) then it may just happen again?? I figure my options are;
Get is repaired, put the can back on and hope they hold (cant even remove the sleeves now they have been in a while)
Get it repaired, purchase some Carbon Can Comapny cans (any other recommendations?), that will probably be lighter?
Purchase a new back box (hopefully not) then put on new cans??
Open to suggestions gents....be grateful of anyone who has been through similar to offer words of wisdom!

Mine cracked, I had the crack welded and a triangular brace welded on as well (hard to describe) The problem is that the entire weight of the cans is carried on the back box welds. Plus the welds get further damaged if you remove cans.
Some cans are quite heavy, especially the stainless ones and they cause yet more strain. The Titanium ones I have removed are really light, carbon cans heavier but not as heavy as stainless
When it stops raining, I will try and take a pic of the repair on mine.

Thanks, would like to see some photos - there doesnt look much room to put in any bracing...Some cans are quite heavy, especially the stainless ones and they cause yet more strain. The Titanium ones I have removed are really light, carbon cans heavier but not as heavy as stainless

I had new back boxes made and fitted by a longlife outfit in Basingstoke.
Cost was £55 each plus vat, I think all in it was £150.
That's a fair price!Cost was £55 each plus vat, I think all in it was £150.
In reply to original post, I had sleeves made by a local fabricating company. These were exactly as per the dimensions in www.mytuscan.co.uk (thin wall stainless tube). They were literally grammes, weight wise,...and have been on the car for +12 months now with no adverse affects.
OP - did you use carbon steel tube for sleeving?

cant see them from work om guessing the bandwidth 'says no' (big pics?)
Will have a look when i get home...thanks again
Aaah, you know i thought maybe you had a different exhaust, but i see its the front of the box that is braced. On mine its the weld on the back of the box, onto which the silencer is clamped, there isnt any room to brace it that side - just been out and had a good gander. Will have a look when i get home...thanks again
Hmm, difficult to know what to do!!
I had thought maybe create a new stabiliser half way up the can, but then it may be easier and cheaper just to put new CCC's on or titanium jobbies!!
