Noise from under bonnet

Can anyone help?
On start up engine squeals as if belt slipping then after a couple of small blips of throttle seems ok.
On the way home last night I get an awful mechanical grinding noise as if something is dragging along the ground but it increases with engine speed not road speed.
I pulled over switched off and started off again and it cleared again.
The car drives ok, not slow, battery is charging at 11.9v and no drop in oil pressure.
The car is only 13 months old.
Has anyone have any expereince of this?
Where do I start to look?
Should I return it to the dealer?
I am not that mechanically minded so any clues would be great.

Shouldn't the battery indicator be at 13V whilst on the move ?

Sounds as though she requires a bit more than a guess as to what’s wrong, I’d get her to your garage ASAP. OH

Good to see you Al. I suppose at least it's broke now rather than half way round Europe.
Just spoken to the dealer, it's an RAC job to trailer back and looks like a new alternator.
