Weekend or Weekday ?
Discussion
I think that would be considered a high mileage rate for most TVRs. The biggest problem is when coming to sell the car on, potential buyers will have a great choice of lower mileage cars to compare yours with. Therefore you'd have to take a hit on the depreciation. I think alot of people on here would agree that a good car is a well used one - loads of maintenance, good running, niggles sorted. But check out the classifieds and you'll see that not many owners use their TVRs to the extent of 20-25K in 2 years but use them as 2nd car (in the main).
Mine’s my only car - 20,000 miles in 18 months. IMHO there’s little point in spending Tuscan money on a car and then only using it occasionally, especially as Tuscan's are such practical sportscars. Yes the depreciation and running costs will be more, but not as much as it would cost to both buy and run a decent 2nd car for 18 months.
Trouble is with earlier Tuscans, very low mileage could indicate usage as a 3rd car, but, more likely, points to the car spending more time in the shop having issues worked on than it spent being driven.
If I was looking at up to circa 2001, I would actually tend to prefer a car with something like 6-10k per year on the clock, rather than the 3-5k per year avg you can see on some ads.

Do the majority of you drive your Tuscans as a wkd or weekday car ?
I do about 15K a year mileage and plan to keep it for about 2 yrs would 40 or 50K miles on a Tuscan be considered as a lot?
I use my Tuscan everyday and a lot at weekends. I tend to agree with TSS. Why spend all that money on a car and leave it in the garage.
Enjoy it while you can.

As with the Cerb, the Tuscan's used weekdays and weekends. No point saving up for a supercar and then punishing yourself all week by locking it away. If you look at any of the cars in the ads with 50k+ miles on them, they're only all less than £3-4k cheaper than low mileage ones at worst. By the time you add in £1k+ per year for servicing, tax, MOT, insurance, plus depreciation on a newer daily-driver/faults on an older daily-driver, you've run up at least the same amount, plus have had to drive a much worse car for 80% of the time.
Only problem is when (not if) the Tiv is off the road.

Might be wrong, but wouldn't a car running at those sort of levels need some sort of regular "exercise"? Especially with the *ahem* reliability of Tuscan's anyway, surely leaving it locked up would do it more harm than good. So when you brush the dust off of the leather to sell it for that extra couple of grand, it replies with a wheeze and a squeaky burp!
my last two Tuscans have been used regularly as did my Cerbera. They were just as unreliable when I stop using them everyday. High mileage ones are subject to very nasty trade-ins.
The dealers/factory needed to see my cars every other week.
This problem hasn't went away even with my 2004 Tuscan which is currently at the dealer for more engine problems.
Needless to say I have had enough and will never buy another one unless someone else takes over the running of the company and fits and decent proven reliable engine.

Lucozade, sorry to hear your bad luck with the new car. Do you know what the engine problems are ? Is it only the engine giving you trouble or is there other problems with the car?
Like you, I am very much put off buying another new TVR. I can handle a few problems, but the fact is the TVR factory make you feel like you are in the wrong, treat you like a c**t and that's when you actually get a response from them.
If TVR actually provided customer service and looked after there customers they would sell loads more cars...
All IMHO, and none of the above is directed at my dealer who has been great
cheers
Whitey
PS. My car has been fine in 13000 miles since it's engine re-build in June 2001...always been reliable...touch wood.

Whitey, from new the car has always been running lumpy. It has flooded plenty times and I've had the AA out to get me off the side of the road.
It took my dealer until 3000 miles to discover that the engine was only running on 5 cylinders and that the 6th one had a sticking throttle body (or something like that). They cured that and within 24 hours the engine was dead again. Stalling all the time and not idling.
The fuel tank is not venting properly which means when I go to put fuel in I have a fight with the petrol cap to get it off - it sucks the cap back on !
Cosmetically there is still glue on the interior from build, the drivers door had a lovely draft, the passenger door was rattling, the roof and boot rattle, the rear screen creaks and the passenger side window still leaks after being fixed twice. The heated mirror feature remained on at all times and the main blowers would not blow hot air. The rear screen doesn't fit properly so the boot catches on it every time I open it. Oh yeah and the rear passenger side indicator fell off the other week and couldn't be screwed back in. Oh hang on - the rubber seals on the doors fell off too. Oh and the Tuscan badges on the back of the seats fell off.
I went for Moonraker black and the paintwork is scratching at every wash - even when the dealer washes it.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Had mine from new since Jan 03 and use it whenever I can. I'm just coming up to 11,000 miles. The trouble is I'm an antique dealer and Georgian chests don't fit in it! So my Volvo has to ferry me to most places when I'm buying. I do use the Tiv whenever possible though and regularly get it out to drive cross country to view sales.
Owning (and more particularly driving) a TVR is one of life's real pleasures. Why limit your pleasure by worrying about depreciation?

I bought mine to use every day. I do over 200 miles a week. I expect to have some problems and to be fair I had problem with my Merc. I think that buying a car and not driving it is a waste of money. All cars depreciate whilst sitting still. You should always look at the running costs for the car and buy car suted to your budget.
I bought the Tuscan for fun and intend to have some
. I bought a very low mileage 2001 model that had sat in a garage for nearly 2 years and had not moved. I'm working on the assumption that I'll catch up with the other average 5k p.a. cars fairly quickly and will then look at the trade in price for another low mileage one.
In doing this I'll slowly get all the Tuscans up to a decent average mileage and protect all out residuals
If you want the car go for it and have fun

Hi,
Mine's was bought as a second car, however it covers the same mileage as the 1st car, 9000 miles in 20 months, not bad for a 45sq mile dot in the Channel. We also have a few trips to France and UK which always involve long distances and so far no real probs, they've only been minor items IMO which, as they've been coupled with services, and has taken the accounts into 4 figs, and therefore might look bad when flicking through the cars history folder, I've got no doubts it's been value for money.
Should I ever ever require a rebuild, I will worry about it at that point, and "I will worry about it then" as I've already sold the family silver due to all the other recent problems. I bought the car having taken into account all the posted problems other owners had experienced, and for their postings I am grateful, as without them sharing their experiences I would certainly not know how to cater for some of the glitches I have experienced and also how to give the car that little bit of TLC that it certainly needs.
In my time with the Tuscan it's been an absolute pleasure to own.
Best Regards,
James Sim.
