Release bearing noise, new clutch imminent?
Discussion
Whilst stuck in stop start traffic yesterday I noticed a not too loud shooshing (best way I can describe it
) sound being echoed back from trees/buildings. If I placed my foot gently on the clutch pedal it disappeared so concluded it was from the release bearing.
Not noticed any slip or difficulty getting gears, but is this the first signs of needing a replacement? I believe it's still on the original unit and if so has covered 30,600 miles.

Hi Andy,
If my memory serves me correctly, a worn release bearing will only be noisy when the pedal is depressed. If you think about it, the bearing is at that point moved onto the clutch fingers to disengage the drive - with the clutch pedal up, there isn't any 'force' 0n the release bearing....However, I stand to be corrected!! (not sure if above applies to twin plate clutches).
Still not bad though - nearly 31K miles from a clutch. Does seem to be pot luck on clutch life according to various post on this forum.
See you Thursday?
Nick

Hi Nick,
Thanks for that, think you're right with regards to noisy release bearings, bit rusty on my theory, long time since I've had a clutch problem, must be twenty years plus
Just seems strange the noise goes when I take up the slack, may have been there all along and I've only just noticed it
Not 100% sure if it's original, but only had 15k on the clock when I bought it so it's a good possibility.
