VERY URGENT...is the battery screwed to the chassis or....
Discussion
OK - the battery on my car (Mk.1 2004) is held into the tray with a 'cranked' plate that is held down with a 13mm nylock on the outboard side of the compartment.
The stud is welded to the outboard outrigger and the cranked plate bears down on the moulding on the battery.
My new battery is a really tight fit and I had to jiggle the loose plate and the battery to get it to 'drop' in within the tube perimeter. Persevere.

OK - I've never posted a photo on PH....because I'm a bit of a numpty with computers.
However, here is a link to Graham Varleys website, which will give a better description with pictures of the battery 'fixings'. In fact Graham's book is well worth buying, as although written for his Sagaris, does cover all the drivetrain for the Speed 6 cars.
Scroll down to get the stuff on the battery: http://www.varleyhyd.com/SpeedSix.asp.

That's what I was trying to describe!
A picture is worth a 1000 words!
If you look closely at picture you can just make out the (removeable) bottom plate that the battery 'sits' on. I replaced the original with a VARTA battery - supposedly of the correct spec' re: dimensions, but it was a very tight fit in the space, hence the need to jiggle the plate/battery to get it to fit.

I'm trying not to be rude but I'm not sure how you can fail to see it...

This is the only clip but it is quite possible it has been removed because it rusted away.If it is missing then there is nothing holding the battery in place - this is why they tend to catch fire.
The bracket does next to nothing to hold the battery in place. As shown in this picture a nylon strap to the chassis does more! This is the only clip but it is quite possible it has been removed because it rusted away.If it is missing then there is nothing holding the battery in place - this is why they tend to catch fire.
I have made brackets that hold battery in place! and a battery with terminals the correct way around. + not near chassis!
