I think I must be slighly mad to even raise this, but in the way that my Ferrari's were soem much better when used all the time.... Is there any way that a Tuscan can be used as a reliable daily driver...?

If yes, what do i need to know?

If yes, what's it going to return on fuel? How far between service intervals? am i going to have to service it every few thousand miles?

Should i just go and buy a Porsche 996TT...?

I used mine as a daily driver from West London to Kent, 130miles+ a day, not a single problem, until I ran out of money a year later for the petrol bills eek

Yep perfectly feasible, easier proposition if your commute is not in urban traffic. Practicality wise- surprisingly big boot, good interior space on the back shelf, steering lock not that great.

Fuel consumption- never measued mine accurately but fag packet calc has seen 25mpg ish at sensible speeds.

Servicing every 6000, major every 12000 (must have valve clearances done).

Be prepared for a few quirky issues and that's about it- nothing more than any other sports car.

If I didn't have to drive through North West London every day I'd seriously consider mine as an only car. HTH

If you fit a Syvecs ECU upgrade kit from Racing Green you can run an economy / motorway mode..plus you get traction control..

A lot of Speed Six owners with the original MBE ECU are quoting 25 mpg and upwards out of town..

Biggest concern is service intervals, at 6k I would need it servicing every 8 weeks, the 911 would be every 6 months ish...

I use mine as a daily driver and it's been fine...

...until today, when I've returned from a 3 week holiday and the battery is flat. So NOT using it as a daily driver is the real problem!

And is there any truth in the horror stories of engine rebuilds every 20k or whatever???

Used my Mk1 as my daily from 2007 to 2009 before writing her off. Before then I has a Chimaera and from 09 to now I've been using my Mk2 Tuscan although just bought another Chimaera for the winter.
All have been reasonable mpg but then I don't cover many miles per week.
Mk1 had rebuilds at 35k and 70k miles but the post 2004 engines were much better and my 2006 Tuscan has 46k and going strong, ( apart from a recent breakdown in the S O France).

Mine is used daily, 2001 4.0. Done 48k. No major problems after recent service. Only had a top-end rebuild.

I used mine for a daily commute for a while this year and it was fine ...

The previous owner used it everyday for ages - racked up nr 50/60k (with a rebuild in there somewhere but its a 01 mk1 so no huge shock there)

I have driven mine every day for the last 2 years as the only car. Sure its got its niggles every now and then - but after having learnt how to look after it have no major problems. I live in central london and prolonged traffic and slow speeds are a daily occurence. As long as you look after your car well shouldnt be an issue reliability wise.

Would advise against driving on packed snow / ice though - Been cought out driving home when it staretd to snow and everythign was fine. Had to drive it to a friends place the next day to get underground parking space and was well and truly glad that there was hardly anyoen on the roads at the time biggrin

So, it seems like an engine rebuild every 40k... So about every 18m for me... That doesn't sound great...

Personally, I think you are talking about pretty high mileages if you think you will do 6k every 2 months. I can't think ofmany 10 year old 170mph cars that will do that without spending lots of time being serviced (perhaps apart from the 996tt)

You won't need a rebuild every 40k miles. Mine has a 100k warranty on the rebuild and TVR Power have just taken apart a very high mileage car to check it and it was fine, I think they said another 100k would be no problem. But you will need a car that has had a good rebuild, eg TVR Power, Str8Six etc.

There will be niggles but they can all be sorted, frequency of servicing is probably the biggest issue IMO.

I like the Tuscan and the 996tt and looked at both. I use my car for some business meetings that tend to be 2 hours or so away and the Tusc is fine for that, but I don't do anything like the overall mileage you are proposing.

996tt is more like a fst company car, Tuscan is more raw and more fun smile

With most companies giving a pretty extensive warranty, I think you are quite safe from the horror of having to rebuild every 18 months.

As for the horror stories: Mk. 1 Tuscans did seem to have some problems, but I believe by now most will have been sorted out. In any case, in 2003 some design changes were made to the engine, so later models should be better.

As for 20k: mine used to be the TVR press car, and it did 43k miles on the original engine, before the big end bearings on cylinders 1,2 and 4 gave in. No issues with the finger followers, just bad lcuk of having a bad batch of conrods that caused the bearings to fail by becoming oval.

When I saw the thread title I would have said they're fine as a daily driver.

But 40,000 miles a year, are you being serious? Get a diesel!

Dude.. I'm on 4 th different Tvr and I love them. I'm currently in a Tuscan and its the most beautiful yet. But I have owned a 911 c4 and I found it dull although I'm sure a tt would be quick its sure footed brilliance actually made it feel quite boring. However. As an everyday driver doing the mileage ur doing ... It's a no brainer. Buy the 997 tt.

Why the hell would I want to get a Diesel... I can afford the fuel, I love cars and my daily commute (50m each way) involves fast roads, motorway and twisties, it's great!

I put over 36k on the ferraris this way (commute was shorter then), the diesel since then has been boring as s***e (although A8s are a comfortable way to burn the miles and the Q7 isn't too shabby either). Basically, I need a daily adrenalin fix...

I'll buy a 996TT if nothing else...
