Apologies, I know this has been done to death but struggling to find anything conclusive through google and search is still down.

Returned from f1 at silverstone last night and checked oil whilst hot and appeared to be at max level (as much as you can tell anyhow before it slides off). For some reason doubted myself this morning so decided to re-check whilst cold as thought I remembered reading it still should show just a lot lower however nothing showing on the dip stick.

Can anyone clarify if that's correct, or if it show a little when cold as don't want to either drive it too low or overfill?

I always thought you can only check oil level on a cold engine left overnight on a level surface.

Oil level should be checked when at full operating temperature on level ground. I leave mine running open the service bonnet loosen the dipstick turn off the engine and check the straight the way. The oil level can be significently lower if checked when cold.

+1

Some say that the oil can be checked cold, but the only true test is to check it when hot. Just watch the cap as it gets very hot !

Is this a speed 6 thing or all engines?

I have always though a middle'ish reading when cold was OK but reading some speed six forums people are saying the oil may not even show on the dipstick when cold.

This, but if you check when you're parking up for the night while the engine is hot and then again in the morning when the engine is cold then you can get a comparable reading.

So you check the oil level when cold before leaving.

Recommendation is - get the engine hot so that the fans turn on, then check. this will give the true oil level reading. If checked when cold the oil will disperse back into the sump meaning it will look like you have more oil then you would if check at the correct point - when engine is hot.

Cheers all, yep know if should be checked when hot, but worry was if oil was low it may damage the engine so didn't want to drive and get hot. Question is at cold should anything show on dip stick?

Sure it's fine just get paranoid after long journeys!!

It's the other way round. You are dipping the oil tank not the sump so it will read lower when cold.

When I check my oil (when the engine is hot) the reading is by the maximum indicator.

When I checked again (when the engine was cold) there was oil just about touching the end of the rod / dip-stick.

So if if its at anything other than at max its unlikely to show anything on dipstick when cold. great thanks!

Nevermind the difference between hot or cold. the oil level can be quite different even between oil temp 70C to 90C +.
