Guys i know its a tough question to ask, as you need to hear the clunk noise when you drive the car, but at low speeds i.e roundabouts, t - junctions, parking etc etc when i turn the wheel i get a clunking noise from the steering?!

how can i tell if it requires a new steering rack? or is it something else? also noticed power steering fluid leaking!!

any thoughts

Thanks again

Probably not rack if OK car is at speed
would change PS oil for something like LUCAS might help with leak
check all bushes and ball joints, on the front, jag bot, saab top, ford track rod end

check for uneven tyre wear

Assuming it's a Mk1, there are 3 UJs and a sliding joint on the steering column that can clunk if they get worn or seize up. Does it happen at a certain point in the steering travel?

Correct MK1, The previous owner had the car 6 years and only clocked 1700 miles, the car was SORN on and off for many years due to him working abroad. This might explain the seize up. Could it been worn? i bought the car with 11500 i have clocked 1000 miles in her and it clonks when i begin the manouver if that being going round aroundabout or parking etc etc. what do you think? its not a constant clunk its only when i start to manouver.

cheers bud

If it's power steering the 'whirr' can happen at low speed ful(ish) lock if the PAS fluid is low.

Same goes for clonking noises it could be the rim or wheels are touching the suspension arms or the wheelarch
