Hi

I have just replaced my alternator and went for a test drive. It started ok with 13.6 V showing on the screen. after a while the battery light came on and the reading went down to 10v. I measured the voltage at the alternator and it read 8.6v at the terminals. The new one had a larger diameter pulley wheel on it would this have made a differance or is it a faulty unit.

Also can anyone recommend an Auto electrician in the Watford area. Might be the easier option :-)

Any help greatly received

Thanks

steve

Before you call anybody out, can I suggest you check the 100A fuse, located just in front of the starter motor. They are known bad actors, and although 'bolted' into the holder suffer from fatigue and start to crack.

I had this problem early last year - with all consumers on I was only getting ~11V. Changed the fuse to a 'midi' type at 125A and the volts went up to ~14V with full electrical load.

So - main bonnet off, remove both halves of airbox and you'll see the heavy duty cable ex the battery to the fuse location (disconnect battery as well). Then open fuse holder and replace. I'd also check/clean the earths at the o/s engine mount and right at the front of the chassis.

hi Nick

Thanks for that checked the fuse and still the same so I took the unit back and it tested faulty so I got a new one and its all sorted now, a good 14.1 volts being pumped out.
