Radio access & upgrade MK1 S

Is there anyway to get access into the area behind the radio? I've removed the radio with a view to replacing at some point however am having difficulty getting the unit back in - it feels and looks like the multi plug and other wires at the back of the unit are are causing the obstruction.

It's also an old Pioneer DAB radio with the DAB box in the boot, has anyone upgraded this type of CD/Radio with a more modern DAB head unit - Ideally i want something with a USB connection for ipod access.

there is a bolt attaching the radio pod to the dashboard (bottom of pod). If you release that, you can take of the whole pod.
