I have a friend who has a Mk1 2000 Tuscan, 22k miles with engine rebuild at TVR at circa 6k (if my memory serves me correctly). He's emailed to advise the car developed a ticking noise on Sunday, he thinks this is from the engine area; the car had a 12k service recently including tappet adjustment.

While I've not seen or heard the car yet, are there any common issues which could cause such a noise - it does appear to have developed to during the drive (the tappets unless having developed a fault should not slip out of tolerance that quickly).

Thanks

It could be slipped shim, or something completly different it you would really need to tale the cam cover of to have a look.
But the speed six engine does make a tappety noise a bit like a sewing machine but if it has got noticably louder recently then he would be advised to get it checked asap, a good TVR garage could tell just by listing to it if something is drasticaly wrong.

George.

Is it when the engine is warm or cold? If its when cold and he's just had his shims replaced to smaller ones due to valve seat wear on the service, then when its cold it might make more noise than normal as the gap will be bigger.

This was the cause of my ticking noise...

On start up it made a few ticking noises then went away for several mins, but came back after that.

My approach would be to not drive the car and have someone Spped6-competent assess the top end. It's not worth the risk of running the motor and create unnecessary further damage.
