Stereo Speakers
Discussion
I'm in the process of upgrading my audio. I think it would be a waste of money putting expensive speakers in the factory location. The speakers there are screwed directly onto the flock mdf, which doesn't give great acoustics ( that's assuming you have a Mk1 with the speakers behind you). What I have done is replace the original pioneer 2-way coaxial speakers with a low profile component mid woofer at the same time bolstering up the gap behind the speaker with sound deadening and making sure that the mdf is securely fastened. I have mounted some component tweeters under the dash. The mid woofers and the tweeters are fed from the head unit ( parrot asteroid) through a couple of passive cross-overs. I am in the process of wiring up an 8 inch low profile active subwoofer which is mounted behind the passenger seat. Even without the sub the sound is much, much better, having tweeters mounted in front of you brings the sound stage forward. I am going to post some pics when I have finished it all.
I spent the weekend fitting dash tweeters and also swapped the head unit for an Asteroid. I couldn't believe how much better a couple of tweeters made it sound, it's so much better!. I've also fitted a sub into the passenger footwell but I'm a bit concerned about the loss of legroom so that might not stay. I couldn't find any space under the seat or behind it for the sub (Clarion SRV313). At some point I'll remove the now redundant Pioneer CD changer from the boot but the cables are under a very well glued down carpet and I don't fancy disturbing it right now.

Out of interest how did you get the power wires for the sub through the firewall? Also where did you earth the sub? This is my next job. I took the power from the 80A fuse in the footwell, there was already a ring tag on one side for a feed to an optomate socket, I just added another (fused) and used the radio earth and then the radio power antennae feed for the switched live. If only I could find a radio aerial that worked I'd be a happy bunny! I tried one of the amplified windcsreen mount style ones just under the dash but it's still awful. At least I can stream tinterwebs radio via the Asteroid head unit now.

Ah, I don't have ring tag on mine, so will probably have to feed a wire through the large rubber grommet in the firewall. Isn't there a wire from the Asteroid head unit (blue one) that acts as a switched live? Out of interest where have you mounted the microphone?
I have got my tweeters in pretty much the same place as you. I have placed the microphone above the rear view mirror and hid the wiring under the black seal that goes around the windscreen and A pillar, it seems to work pretty well there and you really can't see the wire. Just need to install the sub now.
