Water level question??
Discussion
How hot does your Tuscan run? my mkll S is venting steam at moment, i think i must have topped up a little too much.I am not sure if stat is playing up in traffic today it was running at around 100-103 fans cutting in no problem and not getting any hotter. How long does it take level to settle down. Does your run any different?
As I remember the water level should just be above the neck level in the expansion tank.
It shouldnt be getting as hot as 103 deg but the meter does read a deg or 5 to high.
If your water temp sensor hasnt been changed since new it might be worth doing so as it will make sure the fans come on at the correct temp/ the old one gets green and may not be at 100%. If both fans are coming on that is a good thing but you might have asmall air lock in the radiator. Try lifting up the front end and and running the car to temp and bleeding the radiator. There should be a bleed screw towards the top nearside (there is on my SP6 Cerb).

On my Mk2 S the first fan kicks in at 90, with the second a few degrees later (reading 92 or 93?), in four years+ of ownership never seen higher than 94. My level settles coolant just visible in the bottom of the horizont piece below the cap, no matter how much I put in! May be worth replacing the cap, they are known to fail, a VW item IIRC
Yep 103 is hot. Are you positive both fans are on and its not air spilling over from one working fan. Have you lifted the service bonnet and seen both running.
What did it previously run at before it started venting steam? You may have a leak some where in the system which is reducing cooling capacity.

yes both fans are running and half inch of fluid shows whether it will take two litres or not!! i will check airlock. temps were always around 90ish and fans always kick in.I will also top up with coolant rather than water maybe my mix has gone too low. Thanks guys
Geoff, you should never "NEED" to put 2 litres in to top up.The surge pot is a 'pipe within a pipe' reservoir. If the system is 'tight' I reckon about 0.5 litre max should be enough to see a change in the level in the filler neck, and you just want the slightest alteration in level.
To help with expelling airlocks, lift front of car. Check bleed screw (17mm nut) on top of rad, passenger side. Check coolant at heater matrix pass side engine behind wheel arch - 2 flexy pipes/jubilee hose clips.

When people say to give the rubber coolant pipe a squeeze to see if the there's water just around the bend of the pipe, would this squeeze be enough (with a 'pipe within a pipe' reservoir) to actually make a difference to the level in the pipe? Because for me, it doesn't really. I only seem to have the slightest trace of liquid on the horizontal part of the filler pipe, but the car's regularly serviced and never gets very hot so I'm not very concerned about it.Nick

Andy's right.Be sure to buy replacement cap from VAG dealer. They are from Golf Mk.2. DO NOT buy pattern parts. Bought one a few years ago from well known German, Swedish and French parts supplier (clue in text) and it failed in about 700 mls. Cheap, but s

My readings correspond roughly with Andy's, given accuracy of sensor/gauge.

I did this when I serviced the car over winter, thinking "I'll treat it to a new reservoir cap". Bought one from a Volkswagen dealer near me... first time I used the car it started venting steam. It appears that it wont screw down hard enough. I went back to the cap that was already on the car with no issues.Be sure to buy replacement cap from VAG dealer. They are from Golf Mk.2. Couldnt be bothered to take the other cap back due to the waste of time and effort that was required!
