Started the car up yesterday and the brake warning light come on and stayed with a very annoying whining sound (similar to the sound you get when you have the doors open). Seems to then randomly go off and come on when it feels like it.

Anyone experienced this issue before, trying to find out if there's a sensor somewhere I should be looking for.

It's a MK1
Thanks

Not sure it's the same as most cars but could be worth checking your brake fluid level!

Thanks Arbs, I had a look at the brake level fluid level and it seems okay.

Handbrake warning switch? (although the whine which I assume is the warning chime is a mystery)

Could be 2 things.
The whine caused by a malfunction of the door microswitch...Check its being fully 'triggered' and the 2-wire connectors are making good contact. Look behind B-pillar behind alcantara trim panel.

The brake warning light could be a dodgy handbrake switch...I've had to spray the connectors and the switch before because the light was flickering on/off.

My 2p's worth anyway.

Turn the volume down to zero to get rid of the noise.

@Cockey - what volume control? The sound is coming directly from the dashboard.

I noise is in direct relation to when the warning light comes on. If it flickers - then itself flickers too.

I think it must be a loose hand brake connection

Need to remove trans tunnel console - on mine 4 off self tappers - 2 at front and 2 at rear/1 each side.
Take off gear knob and remove handbrake grip. This allows removal of carpeted trim panel around gear-stick and handbrake lever.

Hand brake switch mounted on bracket...obvious once gaiter is off hand brake lever.

Go into the settings menu and set volume to zero. Controls all the beeps such as indicators and open door.

The brake warning light works for the whole brake system. I had it come on when the clutch slave cylinder was on it's way out (the brake and clutch systems share the same fluid reservoir)

Worth checking your level behind the pedal box guard.

Levels behind the pedal box are okay
