Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are when a S6 engine fails? Are we talking pistons through the roof or something simple like knocking noises, poor running starting etc...

Tried to start mine over Christmas, turned over ok 3 times, but sounded like it had siezed before it had chance to fire. Thought it may be the starter motor, so stuck it in gear and rocked the car. Tried it again and car fired ok, but there is a ticking noise comming from the tappet / cam cover area now. Car runs ok, infact there is no detriment to the performance, but have checked it into local dealer just in case.

Bit worried as i treat it with Kid gloves, always warm up properly, change oil every 3k and has been totally reliable over its 9k mileage.

Anyone have any thoughts?

get it into for a dealer for a check over to put your mind at rest. Ours just started ticking one day (tappet noise) - took it down dealers, diagnosed 2 followers gone...3 months for a rebuild

Currently having excatly the same problem, see 'loud tapping noise' on this page. Mine's been at the dealer since Saturday. Just spoke with them, I'm hoping to know the outcome within the next few days and will post a reply.

Good luck.

Cheers. Will be interesting to see what the problem is then... it should, statistically, be free from the finger follower problem being that new. But 9,000 miles is in the right mileage territory for the having such a problem.

What is the cut off point for 2003 engines/rebuilds to not be going bang?

oh ya beastie! Sep 2003. THat should defo not have the follower problem. Is this the youngest TVR to display it James if it is the followers???

I've done 20K now in ma beast and had no engine probs. Kinda gives you the feeling something else might be causing the followers to wear other than simple faulty batches of components??

cheers!

But that said, I know of numerous 2002 and later cars that have had the head gasket fail...

Yep, mine (May 03 car) went at 9200 miles.

It's now on about 19000 miles, and still going strong.

That said, I've probably now jinxed myself, so I'm off to touch some wood with a crossed rabbit's foot

Ed/anyone - forgive my ignorance on this, but would a head gasket issue ever be covered by a standard warranty - notably one from a dealer/purchased from third party? Or is this another "save for a rainy day" item I need to add to my list of items to try hard and ignore when continuing to want to purchase a Tuscan

Mine was covered under the standard TVR warranty as it was less than 1 year old. I don't know what a 3rd party warranty company's view would be, but I'd be very surprised if they could argue against it.
