Exhaust only lasts 15K miles? !!

last month it was the shocks failing - this month the exhaust silencers rotted through on the Tuscan...after 15K miles...of course these are consumables as far as the warranty company are concerned...but surely they should last longer ! ...jeez what do TVR make em out of

anyone else had to have a new exhaust at low mileage?

I had one go on my old car at about the same mileage. I think the upturn at the end allows too much water ingress in bad weather or when cleaning. I had mine welded and had no further trouble for another few thousand miles till I sold it.

get a new stainless steel one fron Hexham Horseless Carriages only about £350 for the full system no more worries and sounds good too with a bigger bore.
All fits in about 30mins.

The exhaust is supposed to be stainless, it will just be the mufflers that are not. Short trips eat through exhausts as the condensation in the exhaust is not evaporated and blown away.

But yes, a good excuse to spend on more NOISE!

when I changed mine none of the original pipe was stainless.

Just checked my sales brochure from 99/2000, it says Carbon fibre/Stainless steel exhaust system....

Better check under mine now!

thats probably just referring to the end cans, rather than the back boxes etc.....

The exhaust pipes/back boxes on mine (2000 Build) are definitely stainless steel although the stub pipes from the back boxes to the end cans have had extra precautionary welding carried out on them.

Is this so difficult to understand, the rear cans are carbon and stainless the rest of the exhaust IS NOT.
The original post refered to the silencer boxes on the main pipes not the cans.

Car exhausts tend to be made from a very low grade of stainless steel. Off the top of my head I think it is 409. Our cans and bike exhausts use 304, you can tell the difference between the two because the cheap stuff is magnetic.

I was talking to the rep from Allied Stainless Steel today about TVR exhausts and he says they are definately 409. He says it is such a low grade that it is virtually the same as mild steel.

The pipe exiting the Cat split about into two last month at 8,000 miles. Apparantly this can be a commom problem...

Dealer re-welded pipe back together (it was stainless steel) and all in now well.....

humph that's dissappointing. I always thought trevors were true stainless (aka 304). It's not as if it's expensive. I had a full stainless twin system on my 300zx from downpipes back and it was only about 500 quid (304, lifetime gaurantee).

I knew the back box (the sideways box that the two cans attach to) was mild as it's rusting, and when I first started looking at tuscans that surprised me I must admit. I thought the downpipes+pipes to back box would be 304 though... cheap b$xtards.

Simon CCC I think you'll find that a lot of so called stainless systems nowadays are actually the cheaper stuff as the price of nickel has gone through the roof over the last two years. 2002 - £300 per tonne.. 2005 - £1200 per tonne.
