My last three cars have been a Chimp, a griff, a 1997 4.2 Cerbie and now I am purchasing a 2000 Tuscan 4.0 ... I collect it on Saturday and was really pleased with myself. Having just read all these stories about engine problems I really don't know if I want one now!!! Do the engines all go pop....!
Can you have the parts replaced before the engine goes ? and is it cheeper to do it this way?
Also if the engine is going to be in pieces could someone give my an idiots guide to getting closer to 390bhp without red rosinging it.......

Hmmm. How to answer this tactfully. Well, when I ran the survey last summer, over 70% of Tuscans from '00 had had an engine rebuild. And of the remaining 30%, they'd largely done <10k miles. And that figure's now gone up. Ones that had been rebuilt recently were largely fine, other than for freak occurences.
If it's not had a rebuild, I'd think carefully before parting with your cash on such a car. Or if it's from a dealer, I'd get it in writing that any engine problems will be covered. Or I'd budget for a minimum of a few grand.

Sometimes. Less hassle, for sure. But guaranteed financial outlay.
If the followers have started to wear, there could well be bits of crap throughout the engine, which can lead to a not-just-the-top-end-rebuild. Which'll cost you significantly more than the cost of a RR upgrade now that the factory isn't being so helpful with rebuild costs. And if that's already started to happen, it'll be particularly expensive regardless.

Taking it in for a £3.5k RR rebuild is a reasonable way of getting 390BHP. Although, I think TVR Power has just put their prices up by a few hundred quid.
There's another thread on here about an alternative place - TVR Craft - that'll do a rebuild and up the power for you, too. And Austec can do a remapping, I believe, which might release some extra horses. General rule of thumb is usually £100 per BHP, though. Would upgrade the suspension before the engine, too.
I won't advertise my car on this thread because that'd be a bit distasteful, and even I've got some moral standards...
