Windscreen Woes
Discussion
Having narrowly escaped death driving up to Cambs on M11 during the snow on Friday I developed a wide deep arch shaped crack on the windscreen about 2" surrounding the driver side wiper – I can’t be sure if this was due to a stone or the heat vents against the cold of the glass. (the car had warmed up before I put the heater on). Anyone else experienced this.
So I have 3 questions:
1) COST
Anyone know how much this will be via a dealer or sensible alternative
2) TESCO INSURANCE
Would appear that I have some sort of windscreen cover with a £50 excess but will this constitute a claim against my NCB
3) GLASS COMPANIES
Anyone used Autoglass or Auto Windscreens. I am quite keen to keep the coloured strip at the top given the lack of sun visors.
Thanks in advance.

Had to get mine done recently. £50 excess, and I had up to £500 of cover I think. Went through the insurance, they were fine, got their windscreen people to call me, great. They called and said it would be >£750 in total.
Sod that I thought. Rang up Racing Green, they got a price from the factory, added VAT, and got their specialist glass fitter to fit it... for hundreds of pounds less.
Spoke to the insurance recommended glass company, asked where they got the screeens from - answer the factory. Now that is some mark up. Told the insurance company who said provided Racing Green put together an invoice showing the factory supplied screen and the fitter's charges, they were more than happy to go with it, and also investigate their glass fitting company.

Well done Luca. I have long suspected that the supposed windscreen specialists rip off the insurance companies who then get it back from the punters in increased premiums.
A couple of years ago, had a windscreen replaced on my Saab, then the insurance renewal premium came about £200 higher than the year before. Spoke to the insurance company and reminded them that a windscreen claim did not reduce the no-claim bonus.
They agreed but eventually admitted they got the money back by increasing the gross premium accordingly
Sad thing is, my Audi had a very small stone chip last week - went to the approved "specialist" to have it repaired before it spread. The "specialist"
seemed to bodge the repair (reckon his drill slipped) and now they tell me that I have to have the screen replaced. Told them to forget it and now trying to get insurers to agree to going elsewhere.

My dealer has a specific fitter at autoglass (the insurance approved co) which they trust to do the work. Autoglass will do the work at the dealership where they have access to seals etc. which will save me some £400 pounds (leaving just the excess at £50) - phew!
Job done!

Hi Di
Certainly, no complaints.
It was Paul this time, but Keith has come up trumps sorting out my FOC replacement part for the duff speedo.
so I am a very happy bunny.
All I need to do is clean the car!!

In fact, something had been omitted from the refit, and as a result a "tappety" noise was leaking into the cabin. It sounded hideous!!
OMG, What did they leave out?
They described it as a "bolt". It was, however, part of a far bigger problem..so I never really got to the bottom of it.
