True Tuscan Value ?
Discussion
Now I'am gonna ask a question here and I hope you guys dont think I'am trying to put a downer on the mark (cause I'am not I love Tuscans). However I'am trying to buy one at the moment and was quite alarmed about the values dealers would pay for second hand Tuscan.
I have a friend who is in the trade and I asked him what a 2000 plate Tuscan booked at( obviously dependant on condition and mileage)He told me TVR's aren't in the caps or glasses guides for prices however he could phone round in the trade and ask TVR dealers what they would pay him for one if he took it as part exchange.
The answer was what worried me. He spoke to four dealers and they all said they would pay between 14-15k for descibed vehicle and if it was to have a rebuild any time recently then to add a grand.
Which brings me to my question.
Whats is a second hand Tuscan truly worth ?
and why is there such a gap between these figues and what they are up for sale at ?
I know dealers generally rip you off but this sounded ridiculous and put me right off buying one because its put a massive question mark over the residuals in my mind.

Generally dealers wont want a Tusc if you intend to PX to say a Boxster or mainstream vehicle. You are better off buying either on here/ from a TVR dealer or through the TVR club magazine Sprint. This applies when selling. Its a specialist vehicle so you have a limited market. IMHO little point in trying to get a non TVR dealer to get you a good price.
You could buy such a car for 19k from the PH classifieds. Most are low mileage so adjusting for that you might get 15-16k from a dealer.
A 3k margin on an outright sale sounds about right from a dealer (they have to add a warranty and any work required to get it in showroom condition).

A 3 k margin doesnt sound bad but you wont find many in the calssifieds at 19 grand unless they are miley or about due a rebuild

Or very, very early cars with no aircon, 16" wheels etc.
I've just part-ex'd my Tuscan for a Boxster - yes I have moved to the dark side.
2000X Crystal Topaz, 29K miles, air con, 18" wheels, FTVRSH, just had major service done. I had little interest privately at 20K and settled for a part-ex value of 19K. Valuations varied massively, from 15K up to 19K depending upon who I was talking to. It was interesting that different Porsche dealers also had big variations. I try not to think about how much money I lost on that car.
Phil.

The reason TVR dealers give for such low trade in prices is that they need to do some work on any car they take in, add a warranty and then allow some cash for a possible engine rebuild whcih the warranty company will not cover (they point to the "we don't cover known design faults" get out clause in the small print)
So given a price of £14k, 2k for paint and tidying up and warranty, advertise it at £19,995, take £19k for it, that leaves £k for profit and to contirbute to the rebuild funds - at least that is what I have been told, no doubt some make more money than others!!

Again though, when was the last time that you saw a Tuscan sold by a dealer for less than 20 thousand privatly yes but dealers usually are around 25 grand for anything decent maybe a little lower for one with a few miles say around 23 thousand. I think they take the piss.
Take the p*ss? Nah. Some might, but not all of them (and usually in post-sale service, not sales). You'll be able to haggle them down to the point where their profit's minimal and no further. Culturally, Brits are terrible at haggling and cutting a good deal - it's a real seller's country.
If you're thinking of buying a new car, I'd strongly recommend a week in somewhere like Egypt where haggling's the norm - sharpen your teeth on everything from food to trinkets to tour guides, then take on a dealer! I've never failed to get at least 10% of the windscreen-price knocked off a car, either in cash, parts, servicing, etc.
Don't agree on a trade price of £14k on a Tusc. I'd say an early 2000, "average" (i.e. not smoking from the back, but not absolutely mint) Tuscan should be at least £2-3k more.
What did it cost new - say £40k.
Now 5 years old - say 16K to the trade, 18 privately.
That 40% or over retatained value after 5 years. Not bad in a market with a glut of sports cars, and a car with a PERCEIEVED (wrightly or wrongly irrelevant for this discussion) engine relianilty problem.
So 5 years with a 'hyper' perfromance car cost between 20 - 24 k depreciation. You would definetly suffer that or more in any other sports car I can think of with similar performance capability, and probably in less time.

All good comments coming in. I've bought many cars in the past but with this Tuscan thing its doing my head in. I suppose what I'am saying is I don't really waant to buy from a dealer ( mainly cause i think they are expensive ) but privatly I cant find the one i want. Has to be absolutly mint, fairly recent rebuild if poss ect ohh and realisticly priced. Iam i looking for rocking horse poo or what?
Probably.
TVR make less cars a year than porsche do in a couple of weeks, just less around, partcularly if you are choosy over colour spec history, or want to buy reasonably close to home.
Best bet is to use someone like rob ingleby (find a sports car guy - links on here somewhere ) or someone like james agger to keep an eye out ( believe has the option to provide full indy dealer benefits, to a finders fee type arrangemnent ie min overhead/profit)

Yes. Second hand cars are not asbsolutely mint with new engines. Consider why someone would pay £30K extra for a new car. You need to find a good second hand one and be prepared to spend a little on maintenance and repair/restoration. These are rare cars, even Ferarri make four times as many cars.

Which is one of the reasons that my Tuscan turns more heads than the Ferrari I got rid of ever did. dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-I'm lovin' it.......
