Clutch and gearchange problems
Discussion
Hi everyone. I thought I would share my experiences with my gear change problems to help other owners.
I realised something was afoot when my clutch pedal pressure suddenly went light and gear selection became a problem. My instinct was a hydraulic issue, either slave or master cylinder but I also wondered if the diagram fingers were braking up too. (For information both my clutch and slave were replaced around 22,000 miles ago.)
Following a visit to AutoBritalia, and an old work buddy Paul Wood ( ex Waldonway TVR service manager ) he found a leaking master cylinder which was duly replaced. This partly helped the problem but gear selection was still poor and I reluctantly decided on a gearbox out scenario.
Once removed we found a trashed slave cylinder that was leaking pretty badly . Obviously the root cause of the problem.
However the story doesn't finish there. It was a good time to inspect the clutch itself and although the main body of the unit, plus plates, were showing signs of wear the real problem were the retaining clips that were almost at the point of failing. These have a reputation of fracturing and then rending the clutch useless.
Anyway in hindsight, as luck would have it, I had drawn a complete blank on buying a new AP clutch....none, yes none being available in the whole of the TVR network and even the Helix alternative option was in the middle of a manufacturing update so not available either. With this in mind I had researched sending the clutch off to a specialist for a full refurb and, through the forums, found a company called CG Motorsport who were well reviewed and experienced with high performance cars clutch replacement.
Mick, the main contact at CG Motorsport, was very helpful during the whole process and turned the clutch refurb around in 24 hours. In terms of value for money, with the proviso that the diaphragm was in good condition, the clutch received a full rebuild and balance all for a price well under a new unit.
So tomorrow it's all due to be finished and I'm hopeful of a nice smooth gearchange ! If anyone is interested I'll feedback the results.
One further footnote of acknowledgment. Martin, the parts manager, at TVR Parts was very apologetic that AP were currently unable to help with any replacement clutches and tried his best to help out with a Helix unit. Unfortunately they too were going through supply problems of their own while they up rated some of the components. So despite his best efforts I made my own arrangements. Couldn't fault his attempts to help though.
