Hi, am sure we may have had this question before so I apologise in advance!!
My 03 Tuscan 3.6 pinks when I start it but otherwise its fine - apart from the fact the Sp6 engine sounds like a bag of spanners etc. etc.

I'm using normal 95 ron unleaded not optimax or super which I've heard can help. Any other advice on why this should happen at starting? Its just had its 6k service.

Thanks!

I know.. your gonna hear it 100 times... but use optimax. then no probs. It's no more expensive (as you get more mph)... well so I've heard anyway... at the 10-15mph I get it hardly seems to matter.

If you're only getting 10 - 15 mph I would get it checked.

Mine's much faster than that.

Define what you mean by pinking.

My understanding of pinking is that on a high performance engine with a high compression ratio, the fuel will pre-ignite diesel style. A fuel with a higher RON will not ignite so easily under pressure and so will be your answer.

Whitey,

When I start the engine it makes a shakey clatter clatter before running smoothly(local mechanic informed me this was pinking) - also have the same problem at low revs if for example I pull away in second gear.

Will be giving the optimax solution a try on the weekend!!

Pinking sounds like a light metallic rattle, a bit like a nail being shaken about in a tin can. The Speed 6 ignition timing cannot be altered so I don't think what you have is a pinking noise, maybe you should get your dealer to check it out.

Good luck

Gleaming - thanks Whitey, it does sound exactly like you say so think it is indeed pinking but will get it checked out anyway!

ar you sure what you have there is not just the speed 6 'tractor' engine ?

it sounds like a bag of spanners/tractor when first turned on and for about the first 10 mins anyway.

It is very hard to tell between the "tractor engine" effect and "pinking"...I have often sat around like an idiot, my ear stuck on the bonnet, trying to tell if one of those valves is being eaten away! I tried fuel enhancers, tuning, throttle body adjustment (I know, long shot there) and I had mild improvements. Optimax helps...Also for me 75 is the magic temperature number and then you drive a Tuscan...before that it is just a car with a faulty fuel pump, dark sparkplugs, leaking spark leads and a maladjusted throttle cable that decides autonomously what the optimum idle speed should be!
