Morning all, so I spent 2 hours yesterday evening trying to rectify the problem regarding the engine fans. (see previous thread)

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=179171&f=5&h=0

What an awkward place to put the fuse box eh?

Anyway, I swapped the 30 amp fuses with new ones and also swapped the relays around. Exactly the same result, first offside fan would come on at around 94 but only for a couple of seconds, and a clicking sound is quite apparent (probably the relay). Then (buttocks clenched) the temp rises and the same fan then comes on at 100 which brings the temp down a bit. The nearside fan doesn’t seem to work.

Finally I think it had enough and just spat out some steam from the front. I let it cool down for a couple of minutes and restarted her and immediately the fans came on the bring her down to the low 90s.

So I think I can safely say that it is not the fuse or the relay (thanks Grahan for sending over a very helpful fuse diagram).

Dodgy tempreture sender unit? Is there anyway to override the fans so that they come on all the time? My nearest indy is 20 miles away, does anyone know anyone in central London(ish) who is capable of looking at this? I am working solidly this week so will need to go and leave my car there after dark...

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I thought this was a thread for fans of the SP6

One idea - when I had the Griff I remember somebody telling me that if the fans give up one temporary fix is by the use of a "magic" tool to short out the sensor/otter switch thingy and leave it on at all times.

That "magic" tool is a humble paper clip. Dunno if that'll get you there on the SP6 - just a thought though!

Had the same problem with mine, whilst awaiting to get on the fery to Holland it let go big time! Pushed it onto the ferry and called Dutch breakdown once in Holland.

The S6 has two sensors on it so we checked that they were both on ok and wires correct etc. tried swapping the relays etc then the only option was to wire one fan live.

The guy rigged a swith dropping down from the ingnition. The thing scared me shitless every time i flicked the switch (standing traffic) it sent a spark out like the Olypic flame!

Once in Blighty it turned out that the motor in one of the fans had gone. Looked like water ingress had knackered it....

Sounds pretty much like mine was. I think you need a new temp sensor. Easy to fit and sensor only costs about 15 quid.

Tim,

One thing to be careful of is letting the engine run for long periods with little or no air circulation through the engine bay under the main bonnet section.

I surmise that someone in charge of my car before I bought it did just that and the result was that the bonnet sagged above the exhaust manifold. The repair was a very poor attempt using body filler (but an excellent paint job), the filler cracked a couple months after I had bought the car. It now has a new main bonnet fitted $$$$$. Do be careful if running yours in confined areas such as a garage.

Unplug the sensor unit for the fan right under the airbox. Make sure you attach the air sensor ontop of the airbox before starting atherwise you will get an EFI fault. This will put one fan on all the time the engine is running and should enable you to get the car to the dealer, but it is not advisable to run the carr all the time like this.

All,
By way of an update, I took the car to the nice chaps at Tower View at the bottom of the M1. They diagnosed the problem and sorted the problem which was in fact a poor connection to the nearside fan. They traced it and cleaned it and now both fans work with no problem!

They also fixed my non performing air con. All it needed was a regas. Now it's totally sorted and ready for the weekend! Cheers guys!
