The Sprint editorial this month got me thinking about engines; how many 400+bhp engines can you buy today or in the past ?

I personally like naturally inducted engines rather than turbo or supercharged as I don't tend to like how they drive and I somehow feel it's cheating.

Anyway here's all I could think of (no after market mods). There must be more ?

Speed6
AJP8
BMW V8 (M5)
BMW V10 (M5)
Ferarri 360 engine
Ferarri 430 engine
Ferarri V12 (575/550)
Lambo V10
Lambo V12

Forced induction :

996 Turbo
Audi RS6 V8
XKR
Noble M400 V6

If you read a few posts on the cerbera forum then you can take the AJP8 off the list.

Not sure of specs but Viper, Corvette, Saleen, F1, Zonda, Carrera GT

Surprising omission of the BMW V12 and the AML V8s. Chrysler V8s and the current Maserati?

That's good, I forgot about those. The BMW V12 - you mean the one in the F1 or another one ?

I was thinkimg more about engines than cars. V12 in the F1, 750, Rolls Royce, etc.; very different states of tune but I think that they're all over 400bhp.

Try mentioning a new engine out of those.

I think I may have been a little more detailed.

Pfft. You're tedious. again.

Maybach 57/62 V12. (T/C) 543 bhp
Merc SL/S/CL 65 (T/C) 604 bhp
Merc CLK DTM (S/C) 574 bhp
Merc S 600 (N/A) 493 bhp
Merc S 55 AMG (S/C) 493 bhp
Jaguar XJR-15 (N/A) 450 bhp
Aston Martin V8 Zagato (N/A) 432 bhp
Ferrari 512TR (Flat 12, N/A) 425 bhp
VW W12 (N/A) 414 bhp
Audi V8 (N/A) 414 bhp (ie NOT the one mentioned previously)
Porsche Cayenne V8 (T/C) 443 bhp
Porsche 959 (T/C) 450 bhp
Ferrari V8 F40/288GTO (T/C) 400-472 bhp
Cizeta-Moroder V16 (N/A) 540 bhp

This list ignores special one-offs and concepts, as well as a number of GT1-class efforts from Nissan, Porsche etc.

Better?

An AJP can make 400 bhp with chipping and breathing. No need for forced induction etc....

That would be 4.5 V8 in the Cerbera (420bhp), wouldn't it?

Chevrolet 427 Big Block in the Corvette was putting out about 400bhp in the late 1960s...
Dodge Viper V10 is now something like 8.8 Litres and 500HP
Jaguar XJ220 with 542bhp (rising higher with right atmospheric conditions)
not sure, but maybe the BMW V12 in the 8 Series (especially in Alpina B12 form)
Bugatti EB110 quad-turbo V12...
Bugatti Veyron (V16/W16? with turbos - 1001bhp according to reviews)
ferrari F40 twin-turbo V8 must be up there, too.
ditto, the Ferrari F50
Toyota Supras, Mazda RX-7s and Nissan Skylines regularly run in excess of 400BHP with no ill effects...
I think the 400 Cubic Inch Hemi V8 used in the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda are in excess of 400BHP, as well as the 440ci non-hemi V8.
Then there is the W12 used in the VW Phaeton and the Bentley GT. Not to mention the Mercedes supercharged V8s and turbo'ed V12s.
What about the Maserati twin Turbo V8 used in the 3200GT - wasn't that about 400hp?
And lastly, the 6.75 Litre twin turbo v8 in the Bentley Turbo, the Old V8 Turbo in the big old Aston Martin Vantage, the V12 in the DB7 Vantage and Vanquish and the all-new DB9 V12. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Possibly, the VW V10 diesel in the Touareg, but I am not sure

Oh, forgt the 427 and 429ci Ford Big Blocks used in GT40s and AC Cobras - well in excess of 400BHP there. Also the supercharged small-block Ford V8s used in the new Ford GT and the Koenigsegg. Oh, and the Porsche V10 in the Carrera GT and maybe even the V8 in the 928 (not enitrely sure of the power there, but it was a 5.7 Litre 32v V-8).

Of course, the original post is asking about new engines, not new cars, so we could also include the fact that people are making engines that can be used in cars that are well in excess of 400BHP. I am thinking mainly of the Rolls Royce Merlin (there was a car built locally here powered by one from a Spitfire) and the V12 and V8 from Falconer Industries - v8s are ex-indycar spec stuff and the v12 pushes out 800bho in standard form and over 1000bhp when supercharged...

I think you should take the speed 6 off the list to - Evo tested it last month and it made 345bhp..

I know some have been fettled and made more than this but most are going to be under 400 (345~375).

Yep. NickCCC's Cerb 4.5 Red Rose made 403 on Surrey Rolling Road in stock form (not even mapping done).

Edited to say some V8 M5's do not make 400 BHP either ...
