Tuscan Mk1 water temperature display

Problem with water temp display on dashboard. Suddenly all the segments are showing instead of just two or three. Fuel segment display is normal.
The water temperature seems normal on the digital display and no sign of overheating.
I have read previous posts on the Forum and have fiddled with all the plugs and connections etc on the back of the dash. No difference.
I presume that the next check is on the temp sensor on the block under number 2 throttle body. Does any one know if this is usually the likely culprit as I dont want to drain down the coolant unnecessarily.
I presume that there is no way of checking the sensor on the car ?
Any help/advice much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the analogue brass shutters are fully open - usually only 2 or 3 segments showing previously.
I was under the impression from a post by nawarne on 22/2/2015 that the sensor under throttle body 2 affected the display (analogue) as well as the digital reading. Is this not correct ?
Maybe I misread the post ?
If this is wrong, what affects the analogue/brass shutter display ?

Without checking my manual (yet) the forward sensor is for the driver and the rear sensor for the ecu.
When you are under the bonnet, check and clean the the fly leads on both. Some use a water repellent grease for electrical use. You may find it is all that’s needed.

Yes, I checked the plugs on each first of all but no difference. is there any way of checking the sensor ?
If I know it is the sensor then I will just replace it but I was under the impression that maybe the analogue display (brass shutters) was operated by something behind the dash.
Nothing is straightforward on a Tuscan and not even a wiring diagram to help !

Happened to me last year on the way down to Clermont-Ferrand. Exactly as you describe, gauge going full scale high.The water temperature seems normal on the digital display and no sign of overheating.

All other 'functions' were normal. Oil temp steady, exiting motorway at Clermont, I could hear the rad' fans cutting in and out as I hit rush hour traffic, no sign of distress! Bottom line - I carried on and aimed to replace the pod sensor on return to Blighty. Did check connector and wiring at hotel in Clermont.
One word of caution, I had to get 3 sensors before finding one that worked. When I spoke with Gordy at Str8Six he suggested there had been a duff batch in circulation. As I used TVRParts, they were very good and refunded cost of the purchases and contributed to cost of returning duff items.
You do loose a small amount of coolant when you remove the 'old' sensor. Just top-up and test run.

Thanks Nick very much for your reply. You say "the pod sensor" but do you mean the sensor on the head under throttle body 2 ? Or is there another sensor on the dash (pod) ?
I am a bit mystified that the sensor is the problem as it seems to be working ok in so far as it is giving the correct information to the digital readout - which is behaving normally.
On the face of it therefore the problem is not the sensor on the head but some other wiring or plug/connector problem - or am I missing something ?

Sorry Nick, yes I missed that. The shutters seem to be fixed fully open I.e. they do not move even when the ignition is turned on. The fuel gauge shutters operate in the normal way.
I assume that the shutters are operated by small electric motors or something similar ?

My bad.
I thought that both the analogue and digital “readouts” were both full scale HIGH.
If the digital value is responding but the analogue/shutter is full scale then it’s ‘probably’ the micro switch that’s not being activated with IGN on
Guess you should speak to Jody at Python Racing to confirm. Can do it yourself, but have to remove pcb stack from pod and disassemble to get to said micro switch.
