Having had 6 months near perfect motoring in first TVR, came down to ground with a bump yesterday..

electrics suddenly died while driving and initial diagnosis of alternator/blown charging fuse was soon turned into the horror of snapped Jack shaft (dont even know what it is..) and due to pulley system, melted alternator too !!! Dont pull me up for incorrect mechanical terms.. i am no expert

My dealer I bought it from says they have never encoutered issue before and although parts to replace are not potentially hugely expensive, the labour costs of removing engine, sump etc are horrendous..

Has anyone else had this problem ??? what was the cost to fix... so far garage are being informative but cant commit to quote and in range of £1500-3000

I am sorry to hear of your plight.
Never heard of one of these ever breaking at all in any engine.... bearings may wear out, but not a shaft snapping...!

A jack shaft is a loose term generally used to describe a secondary drive shaft, (usually driven direct from the main crank shaft). The Jack shaft drives ancilliary devices, in our engines an external pully that then drives the alternator (and I think, also the power steering pump) via a belt. They can also be internal only to drive devices like oil pumps.

I summise that for this to have snapped it has been of a poor grade material or manufacture quality. My guess is that with the sporadic failure of TVR engine components and in particular the cam followers of the S6 engine, they may have component supplier quality issues. Such issues they are perhaps not addressing too well with their suppliers.

It would be interesting to know what components Peninsula retained/replaced in their speed 6 engine that successfully acheived the recent 24 Hour Le Man, clocking an average 94 miles per hour.....!!!!

Anyway...having read other engine issue threads, unfortunately I suspect the price range quoted is likely to be accurate. It seems removing this engine, stripping to clean and reassembly is very labour intensive. Gaskets I can imagine are not cheap as well.

That sounds a really unlucky one Not the likely cause of problems in any car.

Mind you my first TVR ground to a complete halt thanks to a 50p fuse (80amp main one off the battery) with my wallet in the boot and no charge on my mobile 'phone....
