Well I read all there was to read on this forum, then decided on the rather reckless strategy of buying a 31000, 3 ownered, X-reg Tuscan in Starmist Green (Full TVRSH though - but no idea if it's had any rebuilds). So I paid bottom dollar from what I gather (39% original cost) then put the rest of my budget in a high interest account.

2000 miles later it's in the garage....having a rebuild...

boohoo.....

..a rebuild of the front inspection bonnet, because some prat reverse parked into me as i watched in horror from inside a shop, along with two other customers. So no SP6 worries as yet, although the lovely chaps at henley heritage have offered to open up the engine and tell me what has been replaced and rebuilt. They thought it sounded a little on the noisy side, but thought the chain might need retensioning.
(It was in to have a temp. sensor replaced - the only glitch so far).

So be off with you doom-mongers.

I'd be interested to run a parallel log to Lady Topaz's:

New Tuscan 2 v Old Tuscan and see who has more glitches, etc

because the way I look at it, I've already saved 30000 on buying an older car and have the better looking shape as well.

*runs and hides*

Happy driving to all Tuscanites.

good move. thats exactly what i thought, too much gloom and doom on here. the way i saw it was. buy a cheaper one and keep the extra cash just in case it does let go. and then who cares its just so much fun.

My car is in for a rebuild BUT the dealer has kindly lent me a T350T Red Rose conversion (after a month of diesel Vectra) for the last 3 hours or so I have given it and various BMW's etc a caning! There is no doubt at all that the speed 6 is money well spent. I am looking forward to the return of the prodigal.

Best to wait to see what henley Heritage 'find' though....

Suspicious noises CAN mean rebuild is imminent.

Best to shop around for price or what type of rebuild if the worst happens, ie the likes of TVR Power or this Autocraft company (with A J Melling on board)

What should the correct prices be in your post? I assume you did not pay 31k for an X reg Tuscan, as that seems a little high a price....but further down you say you saved 30k on a new car to get an older one. What price did you actually get it for? (if I may be so bold!)

I assumed that the 31k was the mileage.

I paid 18k private purchase. 31k was the mileage.
I really liked the colour - silly I know. There was a similar car for sale on here, but located in south wales, which i think was dropped to 17500.
Anyway my point was that there was a definite logic to all these would be purchasers in going for an early car, if you can afford the running and maintenance costs. You can pick up a number of similarly exotic cars in that price range -Ferrari 308's etc, but the servicing, running is going to be similar if not more expensive and they'll be at least 20 years old!!
To me the depreciation is a bigger killer than any sp6 problems. At least i don't have to deal with that. At 6000 in lost value every year on a new car, that's an engine rebuild annually if you buy an early car! I know that we should expect more from TVR, but I just wanted to point out the positives of the early cars to all the people who wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

An extremely valid point, and in fact one which I used when buying mine 2.5yrs ago: 27K privately or 32K from a dealer for virtually identical cars. HMMMMMM tricky one.........Go for the cheaper one and bank the 5K for a 'potential' rebuild. I've now added a further 13K miles to the initial 9k with no probs.

People buying 2000/2001 tuscans are getting serious value for money these days. All niggles sorted, usually uprated suspension, 18 inch wheels, etc..... all for 20K or under ------------> BARGAIN

That's generally the way I look at second hand cars.....if you get one that's been around for a few years, chances are the previous owners have tightened up all the bits that were loose, etc. And that goes for any marque.

Don't blame you for buying cheap and putting the rest of the money away. Barring an utter catastrophe, there's only so much that can go wrong in one go.
