Mk1 Aluminium Dash Surround Removal
Discussion
Hello,
My dash pod is in need of some TLC. The perspex lens has come unstuck and there’s all manner of detritus that’s gotten inside.
I was planning on removing the whole thing and cleaning it up as it seems a bit fiddly to do in situ.
However, I’m stuck at getting the steering wheel boss off the spline. Without doing that I can’t remove the aluminium dash surround.
I’ve found some threads on dash pod repairs, but none of them seem to go as far as getting the surround off.
I’ve gotten this far:

Any suggestions on how to remove the steering wheel boss? I’ve got the centre nut off. The mount itself is attached with nuts and bolts, but I can’t get to the back of the to hold them captive to undo. I’ve tried pulling the whole thing of the spline but that’s not proving too easy and I think there are other bits that will come off with it.
I’ve also tried using a puller mounted to the boss, but the boss starts to deform so that isn’t going to work. Maybe I need a puller that can get into the two holes either side of the spline?

To get the boss off you need to get a socket (8mm?) on the bolt head at the back of those 4 nuts, but you can only do this if you can turn the steering shaft so you can access each bolt from the left or right side so you need to undo the clinch bolt on the steering shaft above the pedals and disconnect it to allow the shaft to rotate freely. Make a note oor mark top dead center for steering wheel alignment later.
Make sense?

Yeah that makes sense. I couldn’t find a way in to the bolt heads though, I think I need to disassemble more of the dash pod to get to them. I’ll save this for next time.
For today I was able to get the Speedo out which turned out to be enough for me to clean out the debris and clean and reattach the lens. It was quite fiddly, but got it done in the end.

I got mine off with the steering wheel attached by loosening centre nut (but leaving on to avoid the A&E visit) , applying penetrating spray and pulling/wobbling the steering wheel for a long time, with lots of swearing. I was replacing the steering column so needed the whole thing off.
