Found a TVR Tuscan S in black I like. It’s on a “03 plate” with no engine or gearbox faults to date… having covered a little less than 8000 miles. It’s from a registered dealer so comes with the new warranty.

Before I spend all my pennies anything in particular I should be asking and checking for? Engine temp, idle revs little tell tale signs etc.

If you are buying from a dealer, then the car should be in an almost new codition. Your main concern should be the quality of the warranty.

Ask the specific question about what would happen if you needed engine rebuild work, and get the answer in writing. Statistically, if the car gets another 10-15000 miles without needing it you will be statistically a lucky owner.

Most warranties may not cover 'wear and tear' items, and the car will of course be sold as is seen. Many Tuscans in the way they are set up wear the front tyres abnormally quickly on the insides of the front tyres. The only way you will notice this is if you turn the wheel to full lock so you can see.

Wow, you must have been a good boy, I usually get a pair of socks for christmas.
With regard to your Tuscan double check that it IS an 'S'. My 53 was described as a 4.0l S in reg docu'but was infact a 3.6. The origional owner bought the car as an S and only found out it wasn't when he traded in for a Porche and they knocked 5k of his trade in price. It was still advertised as a 4.0l when i bought it. He told me he was suing **********(main dealer) for the difference. Dont know how he got on, not spoke to him since. I know it sounds soft but this chap got caught out, the obvious signs being the spoiler and the 'S'badge i think. Only done 4K in mine as yet(10K total)and 'luvin it'..

Believe it or not, if you can get the main bonnet off to reveal the engine itself, then the factory usually wrote the engine spec in black felt tip pen on top of the rocker cover.

Mine clearly says 4.0l. Its not scientific, but welcome to the world of TVR!!!

He didn't notice the lack of rear spoiler and front splitter? Ot he just didnt realise they should be there?

I cannot believe that a main dealer sold him the car as an S. It beggars belief.

Yes, Yes and Yes again, if you like it buy it, don;t hang around. We waited 2 years before taking the step and wished we had bought much sooner. My understanding is that the new TVR warranty is very good. I am sure someone will be along soon with advice on tell tale signs (if there are any). Obviously this time of year is very good to buy, so go an strike yourself a deal.

I for one will definately be considering a Tuscan Convertible next year and that will be the first time I have ever considered buying from the same manufacturer more than once.

Developments…
I’ve discovered the TVR registered dealership, are brokering on behalf of a seller on this particular Tuscan s. Purchased from them new 03 at this dealership.

This dealership has been most helpful. However, after a conversation today I’m more than a little confused.

1. The previous, happy owner wants more than my original proffer. That’s ok. I offered very close to the asking price cos it’s a nice car. The dealers have said he expects, between: £750 and £950…more. My dog could work out my next tender.

2. TVR Warranty. I asked for the new wear and tare. Full belts, braces, and bicycle clips warranty to be included in the price.

A) I’ve been told because it’s a 03 car just serviced at 6,000 miles having covered only 7,610 from new all should be fine. They would however check things over. Not a full service.
B) I asked about the 118? point inspection for the warranty, - that would be done but don’t need the extra wear and tare because…after reeling off what was covered “ A mist appeared over my eyes” I controlled myself enough to ask about finger followers? Apparently covered. A list will be sent of covered items on request or I can speak to a rep regarding the policy. Out of my depth, only said followers and rods cos seen on site.
C) Also something about the MOT – they, the dealership would pay when due cos its in warranty.

A totally lost Tufty, can someone shed some light before I say,
Sod it, buy it anyway

I can only report story as told to me, I rang the previous owner besause i was having trouble obtaining V5 after his personal reg change. He told me that he bought the car ex demo and as it was listed as Tuscan S 4.0l on the V5 (which it was)that was what he thouht he was getting. He certainly implied that the dealer had knowingly allowed him to think this. He then after 15months traded in for a Porche. The P garage initially offered him a figure to trade in the TVR and the deal was done. P garage then discover TVR not S and inform him that he will have to pay 5K more. This kick in guts no doubt infuriates chap having already heamoridged money on the deal and he blows of at ***********?? They tell him to sod off and he takes it legal.
Now he may have been a numpty for not knowing the difference but makes you think, dont it?
I rang the factory for confirmation on car engine spec..3.6. V5 now updated.

Are all of you saying that all 4.0 tuscans have rear spoilers.
I have a 2000 my Tuscan 4.0 without either splitter or rear spoiler or am I mistaken?
What is the splitter anyway?

Tufty, have you looked at other Tuscan S's at main dealers? I think I would certainly be wanting the new TVR Approved Warranty and as far as I am aware the only way to get it is to have the full xxx point check.

Personally at this time of year I would have thought it should be a buyers market and if the dealer isn't prepared to deal find another car with the full approved warranty.

I think the earlier engine tuscans where all 4.0l(360BHP) with the red rose(390BHP) being the S equivelent. After about 02 the st tuscan was the 3.6l(350BHP,looking same as the older 4.0l) and the 4.0l(400 BHP.) the S version having a rear spoiler, front splitter(flat fin under the front nose ) and a different rear light layout. So some 4.0l versions will not have the S spec. The V5 and owners manuals will probably be for a 4.0l regardless as with mine. WHEW.
I think what i have just said is correct, on the other hand it may be a complete load of bollox in which case i'm sure someone will put us straight.
Regards D.

Ps sorry Tufty, i seem to be hijacking your thread, best of luck and remember its december, the best month to get a really good deal.get that warranty!

Mmm…what have I started?
O YES it is …..O NO its not…

Mine is. Well, if I buy it.
All I wanted was quick guide to acquisition of my first TVR Tuscan S purchase.

Probably not allowed to mention registered traders name, so can only say the car resides in a centre near Barnet. Go, have a look…..If Interested....Don’t worry about the Hijack

what ever you do, wahetever you buy, Just get them to put it in writing... If they mean what they say, they should have no objection to writing it dowmn, if they won't write it down ( well why not )....

Basic business sense...

I they start 'don't you trust me rubbish' - be polite, say of course, howver, you could get run over by a bus tommorrow, change jobs, anything - the next chap I deal with won't know anything about it, and without it in writing - might feel i was trying things on...

I am guessing it is a car with a black exterior and tan interior? The price looks to be very good and under what most main dealers are selling them for. That car does appear to be a genuine S so I don;t think I would worry about that.

Why not offer them what they are asking but say you want the proper new TVR Warranty.
