Who's been tempted to Part ex for a 911?
Discussion
I have a lot of respect for what Porsche have acheived technically and mechanically to date.....I just wish they would get a life and bury that hideous late 1950's look.......It's been around just a little too ferk*n long IMHO, but why they have to apply it to every damn model. What happened to the guy that designed the 924,8 and 944 series? was he sacked, left Porsche? coz I thought he was going in the right direction.....I guess the guy who posted "they appeal to a different people" is spot on. I believe they do; mostly rich folk who wanna go fast but only know where the fuel filler is.......Porsche build quality and reliabilty in a TUSC...NOW thats what I would be happy with and willing to pay for

A mate has a 911 [well a 996] same as isnt it? He let me take it for a spin and it is an awesome drive, really soaks up the speed in a way the tuscan doesnt. Could double the speed limit easily without knowing it, but is that what we want in a sports car? The tuscan feels raw by comparison which is not a bad thing!
When out with both cars at a fuel stop we came out to find a group of kids crowded around the Tuscan, not one glanced at the Porche which really hacked off my mate
If you want a 'thrills' car its gotta be a TVR. [and the porche is 20kish more]
Dave.

The way Porsche reliability has been going recently, it may not be long.
Marcus ...prey tell more.....I was at the Geneva M show a few weeks back and Porsche had a great component breakdown display. They displayed the full on drive train for the Turbo model and the engineering looked fantastic, really looked solid and well put together. I thought it a pity to hide all that good engineering under a 40 + year old shaped body....!
Been there, done that. Lasted 12 weeks before coming back to TVR.
Porsches are nice, but in a 'nice' way, not the bend you over the aga and give you a seeing to' sort of way (Thanks JC for the quote).
Mine was the full blown 400+ bhp turbo and even that was boring compared to the Tuscan and it lacked that visceral evil sense of fun the TVR has in spades.
Dont do it!
The porsche reliability is nothing to write home about. Lots of horror stories about RMS seals dying on 996 and 997's. It's not just TVR's.

Are you really considering it mate?
Or are you partial to an onslaught by Tuscaneers!
Whats your gripe with your motor, I am sure we can find a way around the problems my man.
I have mailed Rich, and asked him to join us, hes a 911 man I am sure he will attempt to level this forum out

I just meant that the 996 motor seems not to be as robust as the older Porsche motors were. The RMS issue aside, there seem to more reports of motors being replaced under warranty etc recently. I guess you don't become the most profitable per car maker by over-engineering and using individual product line design.
Yep, just made this very swap. Spent £44k on a 3.5 yr old 996 with 17k miles from an OPC (Same as the new Tuscan in 2001) last November.
Totally different animals really, Henry(the Tusc) was a real headbanger & just the best fun you can have on 4 wheels. Loved it to bits - BUT - had all the usual rebuild/ reliability issues and eventually they simply p******d me off too much. I never had the courage to add up all the bills!
Ms Piggy (the 996) on the other hand is soooooooo civilised, to the extent that it is basically boring by comparison. Built like a s***t brickhouse and definitely good for as many miles as you want. Very easy to lose your licence as you dont realise how fast you are really going. Much cheaper to run as well.
Do I like it as much? Well, no, but it is much more sensible and that suits me fine for now.
PS The RMS issue is well covered in the Porsche bit of PH, with lots of recent threads & like all these things is not the problem it is sometimes cracked up to be.
Oh, I nearly forgot, Porker owners NEVER wave, after all we'Re not in a TVR so dont need help!

As 2 guys have mentioned it already, that you dont realise you are going that fast in a Porsche...is one of the reasons I'm thinking about it...I used to have a UK mkIV supra 326bhp standard, and got 140 without a blink of an eye, I saw 171 and 168 on the clock, and that was driving it as well!! The most I've actually seen on my tuscan clock is 140 and i was nervous as hell, i think the main reason being which goes for the porsche is that it just doesnt feel safe in TVR going them speeds, as I said 25k is a lot of money, one reason I bought the car is so i could go fast and feel safe...and that doesnt work...anyway going at nice steady speeds does feel very pleasing, very pleasing, and as my missus says, it keeps my licence from getting any dirtier! mind you wouldnt buy a porsche for anything less than £34k going by whats available...and thats a hell of a lot of money !!! still love the looks and sound of the tusc' so its not that I'm definately getting rid. I'm just worried also of paying out for rebuilds and stuff. Spending the 9grand more may be done if i keep the tus!

When I had by Tuscan, sometimes I had 200 on the clock without even driving it, just had the engine purring on my driveway!
Then sometimes on the motorway I would be passing cars like they were standing still, and the speedo was stuck on zero! I am guessing this was like a Blackpool special time warp function so I darent look at my fuel gauge unless I jinxed it!
Seriously though, I can see the sentiments about the 911, it is a great car but will never have the 'X factor' of the Tuscan, BUT you will be able to enjoy it without listening for the 'death clatter' sound from the engine, whether it is imagined or otherwise...
I banked my Tuscan money and have been saving for the last year for a 550 Maranello. I hope it will be the best of both worlds!

You mean the boring performance of the Porsche with the potential bills of a Spd6?
I wont mind the paying the upkeep costs of the speed 6 on a £150,000 car... And if I ever get bored of a wailing Italian V12 putting out 485bhp (and not a Blackpool bhp either...) then I will probably have to take up base-jumping, freeclimbing, or doing that thing they did in Flatliners....

Well there you go, I had no idea that Porsche had issues with the rear crankshaft seal (these days I don't read as much motoring press as I used to) however, looking on the net it certainly is well documented. Eventually quality is usually an area that suffers when trying to cut costs even further.... Still I can't see that Porsche will lose their die hard customers to the likes of TVR even if the TVR reliability was to become an equal. Porsche build cars which do appeal to a different kind enthusiast/driver.
Woody have you tried a track day driving experience with an instructor? Such an event may identify any driving improvements you need to make behind the wheel. Have you had the car suspension checked out? Nitrons improved my S no end. And of course you know your Tuscan does respond at the slightest of steering input, but be aware that its not good to grip the wheel tightly at high speed. You definitely need to be relaxed and not fight it. Please forgive me if I am appearing to be preaching here, I merely wish to help out. I am taking a track day lesson when I get mine back from Craft in order to learn how to handle better the increase in power. But at the end of the day if you want to make the jump to a 911 because of reliability and reasons of safety then you should really do it, rather than risk a catastrophe.
Good luck
G

I'm only jealous. I love the 550/575, and have the picture of that matt black one as my wallpaper. I just remember reading the bit in Evo about Bennno(?) buying a 456. The dealer did a service and a couple of reasonably minor bits on it (a couple of oil leaks etc) before he picked it up and if the warranty hadn't covered it all it would have cost £8500.
I'd swap my Tuscan for a 993 T4 and it was a choice between it and a 965 when I bought. I'm not a huge fan of the 996s, but I guess if someone gave me a GT3 or GT2 I wouldn't complain.
