Smoky brakes

When I was much younger, I managed to set fire to a set of brake pads on a Rover SD1 at Le Mans - which at the time was very cool...

Last week, when driving my new Tuscan back from its 1000 mile service, I was driving quite fast and heavy on the brakes 3-4 times, and when I came to a stop, there was smoke coming from the offside front wheel - which was much less cool...

The traffic kept moving for a few miles, and when I finally found somewhere safe to stop, all was fine - although a few signs of soot around the wheel - anybody else had a similar problem - or anybody know of a good fix?

I did once have smoking brakes on my Tuscan after 20 minutes of hard driving and then coming to an abrupt stop for some red lights from 130+. I’d say it’s pretty unusual and you really have to be trying.
