My 2000 Tuscan has just gone into Henley Heritage for an 'EFI Warning', I was hoping it would be a simple sensor problem but how wrong could I be. "Sorry Sir, multiple faults, will need an engine rebuild".

Oh great. They told me the approximate cost to rebuild and bring up to 2006 spec would be £5,500 - £8,000, but they won't know exactly until it has been stripped down. cry

I've read all the posts on rebuilds but none have mentioned these kind of sums.

Is this a normal type of cost? Is there somewhere else I should take it to get it done cheaper?

Any advice on what I should do would be useful. Thanks.

I'm sure you could get a better price than that - have a goosie at the S6 forum and take your pick of the Indies......Austec & Autocraft are two names that somehow spring to mind.........

Maybe get a second opinion -mine had the same "EFI Fault" which became illuminated a few weeks back. The garage have checked the oxygen sensors and think the problem is due to the Throttle bodies.

I got a FULL rebuild done by TVR Power last month, for just the engine rebuild and blueprinted (more of a tolerance fit/polished etc), it was £5500 incl. Bottom end just had the crank polished and the bearings replaced.

Thanks to everyone for the emails and postings....

I have decided to go with TVRCraft for the rebuild after a lengthy chat with Dave, who is clearly passionate about TVRCrafts Speed 6 mods.

He thinks he will have it done in about 3 weeks, it will be upgraded to Red Rose and he is confident of improved reliability...........fingers crossed !!!

Did he give you an estimate of cost?

Before you commit to a rebuild do you know it actually needs one...personally I would be inclined to look for a second opinion before taking the car to Salisbury.

Why do people trust someone who doesnt work for TVR direct??? I hope that doesnt sound a silly question. Would be interested to know how much they charge you too.

Thats a fair question......

I have to say Henley Heritage were very good, they explained everything that would be involved in the rebuild and that they would be using factory supplied parts which would bring the engine up to 2006 spec (several of which they have done before without any failures since the rebuilds)..... So why did I decide to go to TVRCraft instead ??

Basically, I have received emails from quite a lot of Tuscan drivers who have gone through rebuilds, some done by TVR dealers, some from Austec and some frome TVRCraft. TVRCraft have been making modifications to the engine with input from Al Melling, re-engineering parts to supposedly last longer than the factory equivalents, ultimately ending up with an engine which is more reliable and has improved cooling (obviously, the proof will be in the pudding). Also the TVRCraft rebuild will benefit from Red Rose cam timing and a performance gain.

So I am taking a punt, both have 12 months warranty, both cost the same (approx £4,900 + VAT), the TVRCraft one will be ready within 4 weeks, the HH one will be up to 8 weeks depending on part supply from the factory (which is awful at the moment by all account).

I'll be happy to give updates of my experiences when I get it back!

Not sure exactly what you are asking here, but if I read you right here goes my personal point of view:

For me it is not a case of not trusting an individual of TVR, it is a case that I no longer trust TVR as a company. I am confident that TVR have sold a product that essentially has a tainted history of being unfit for purpose. I have first hand experience of how TVR have handled the problem and seen what attempts TVR have made in trying to put things right and I am not that impressed with the result. I like the engineering pedegree I have seen elsewhere and believe there to be far better engineered solutions outside of TVR. I do not believe TVR have addressed the problems adequately. That is my reason for not trusting TVR.

Its only my opinion and if it upsets some folk then tough, but I will spend my money where I believe my interests will be best served.
