Clutch worry - Advice pls!
Discussion
Guys,
since bought tusc, struggled sometimes to get lower gears, nothing major, but whilst moving in traffic,at low speed, two or three goes to get it into gear. When givin it some, like hot knife through butter, but in tight turning circles, a right pain. Not having owned a tusc before I have nothing to compare it too.
Is this normal, car has done 27,000, and cannot see any history for a new clutch, going in soon for a front spoiler fitting, do u think its clutch time too?
Dave
Almost certain it is I am sorry to say...
Personally I would not bother with installing a standard TVR AP clutch as the same will happen again. Ask your dealer to get a Clever Trevor clutch or a TVRCraft clutch, The former is a modified and improved AP clutch, the latter is a race designed clutch but both are far superior and will out last the standard TVR item.
Good luck

Thanks, I just thought all were like that.
That's the problem, they are eventually....knackered.
The TVRCraft Clutch conversion is around £1100.
I'm having it done on mine - you will find cheaper, but you get's what you pays for.
Check the forum for other clutch postings as there's details on the Clever Trevor unit as well.

I have just had mine returned with this clutch fitted..
WOW.. makes a noticable difference.. pickup is good and even the guys at Racing Green where impressed with build quality.
Only issue is I need to go back to the gym and its much tougher than previous AP racing one.
Oh yeah, and the biting point is incredibly early, so be prepared for a *cough cough*few stalls as you adjust..
Price is actually £1095 + VAT + fitting

sorry for belated reply - been away..
originally would have been 5 hours labour.. so £1600 all in.. sounds ridiculous when you write it down but considering that was my 3rd clutch (my Tuscan has done 42k) one popped at 25k, one at 14k seemed a valid investment.. however having to send it back after 4 days becasue they sent it out faulty hasnt filled me with love and enjoyment!! so another week off the road, 2 days off work to get the car to and from the garage and a feeling of whats the point..
oh yeah and considering the gearbox selection had eroded as well and needed a re-con gearbox.. been an expensive summer with the Tuscan and just loving watch those residuals fall through the floor..
:-) joys of owning a TVR!

Al,
would be really interested in your response re the whirl.. Martin thought it was just the clutch plates coming together, but admitedly its not great when in commute traffic..
also noticed it generates much more heat in the gearstick than before.. does yours?
as for getting used to it.. lol.. know exactly what you mean... never used the handbrake so much on hill starts !!! lol
as for performance.. agree with Martin, it such a better pickup now rather than additional power.. although much better in a rolling start ;-)

They said that it significantly improved performance, close to that of an S.
How can a better clutch increase vehicle performance? It doesn't add any extra torque or power to the engine.
My best guess would be the lack of weight. I have had both the standard unit and the Craft version in my hands and the standard unit is more than twice the weight, the Craft version really is incredibly light. The reduced inertia will be represented as improved pick up or to put it another way, engine speed response.

I haven't noticed the heat, but I've had a TKO600 box fitted now, which seems to generate much less heat than the T5.
I will ask the guys at Craft at the weekend about the clutch noise. It sounds like metal turning on metal.
The pick up is great though,
once you adapt your driving style - a little more revs and then don't lift off at all when near the biting point. A bit of a bitch in traffic. I leave a much bigger gap to the car in front now.

well.. we had another technical issue where as Dave explained under the original engineering one component (thrust adapter?) hadnt beem made to the required spec and had broken, allowing the cluthc to sieze again.
Frustrating - yes However... all credit to Dave and Autocraft.. he sent a recovery truck immediately and took it back to Sailsbury and fixed the issue immediately. The component has been replaced, one of the other threads shows a diary for Tuscan complete rebuild @ Autocraft and the owner confirmed his was replaced too..
Had it back now 2 weeks and 1000 miles.. it has bedded in fantastically.. clutch has softened a bit, still a really REALLY early biting point, takes time to adjust in commute traffic but otherwise great. when pushing along a speed, quicker entry in and out of gears and noticeably quicker pickup too..
So, I guess it has been a learning curve all round.. but ultimately smiles now..
Expensive - yes but now glitches are fixed, re-assuringly so!

Yep, 'twas mine. It must be frustrating for Craft when sub-contracted parts are made sub-standard. The mud seems to stick with them and not the supplier. However, can second everything you've said re the clutch performance. Definitely an upgrade any TVR owner should consider.

I am currently waiting on a new clevor trevor kit, a leaking slave cylinder after 29k miles has brought this on, hopefully they will get new stock tommorow
If it lightens up the clutch then great

Foz 01,
any news on the clevor Trevor kit. Did it lighten the clutch feel or not??
