The Heating System, does anyone understand it

Have just returned from a trip to Gatwick to drop off a friend, travelled back with the roof off, I cannot really work out the heating system, is it possible to get really warm air to your feet in cold weather without the roof. Also, I have noticed that the vents below the steering wheel only seem to work when the system is set to cooler temps, is this normal??

The vents below the steering wheel only blow cold air.The vents in the footwells should blow hot air when selected along with the dashboard & rear screen vent although on my MK1 Tuscan only three of the four dashboard vents use to blow hot air the far one on the passenger side only ever gave cold air.
The servo motor that controls the heater is also a bit prone to stripping it's plastic gears and you end up with no heating at all.

Might not be relevant but I sometimes find that the screen vents blow warm air even when the temp dial is set to cold. As a fix, if you rotate the dial to hot and then back to cold again, it tends to "re-set" the valves and blows cold air through the vents.
With the steering wheel vents, I am happy that they only blow cold air as this helps to cool down the hands, especially the left-hand which tends to get a wee bit warm from the gear-stick, especially after a couple hours driving......
Otherwise, my air con works fine, the passenger and driver leg vents blow the correct temp air and, on a cold morning, it is lovely to have the warm air coming into the cabin.

Check the pins on the ECU (stuck to the back of the dash in the passenger footwell or in my case hanging from the leads as the glue was not good enough to keep it stuck in place). The pins burn out on occasion. Mine went last week and Rob at Castle said it was a common problem.

To my knowledge (mk1) the lights are there to give an indication of the heat setting, they should not be coming on and going off of their own accord. I suggest your analagy is most likely correct.....there is a loose/poor connection.

Once again I have had a similar problem , and I managed to sort it out .Try lifting the ash tray out of its hole , underneath it you will find a couple of connectors , they being amongst other things for the heater temp selector and for the fan and ac . Give `em a waggle and if as was in my case a loose connection is the problem the lights should come on and the fan start working . if this fixes the snag , try single out the errant cable and push it further into the connector block . Check it again when you have refitted the ash tray .

My heater ECU has blown the circuit board once, and even after it was replaced it melted the connector block due to the heat being given off around the pins.
I found that the wires were just crimped onto the pins on the connector block and some of the wires (judging by the thickness of the live and the earth) are quite high current. I bought a new connector block from my local dealer and stripped all the wires to new metal and instead of crimping the pins on I soldered them all. It hasn't given me a days trouble since.

Just a late thanks to Gordon The-Gofer for his ECU note - just picked up my Tuscan having had the temperature sensor in the engine replaced (which hopefully will be the end of my overheating fun) when the technician said that the fan wasn't working in the cabin. I replied, "it does but it's crap" because it has never been much more than a puff in the wind since I got the car. Pulled the ECU, found a black pin, two minutes with a needle file and some emery paper and the biggest shock of my life when I got a near force 4 in the face! Amazing how these small things can make you so happy!
