Removal of Stereo Pod

I have one of the original stereo pods and wish to change the stereo and probably the pod for the later design with the door opener buttons. I've read a few of the historic posts on removal of the pod, but am still struggling! I have removed the centre console as advised and located the bottom thread of the post - it has a 17mm nut and washer on it. I can remove this; which leaves just the thread of the bolt exposed below the shelf. Between the pod and the shelf above there is a nut (13mm) which has a conical aluminium spacer attached below it. I can move this up and down the thread, but can't establish how I get to a position where the pod is going to be released. Its driving me insane now and my nuckles are bleeding. Help!
