Hello, I went to look at a Tuscan for sale today and the vendor told me that from a cold start the gear box has a job to go into reverse so i should select 1st first ! Is this true or is it a story to cover up something dodgy ? if anyone could help me out would be magic , Thankyou .

Can't see why the oil is the same viscosity regardless of what gear you select.

Unless the Tuscan uses a different box to older TVRs it's true. I always select a forward gear 3rd or 5th before going into reverse otherwise the gears don't mesh. True on all RV8 cars and my old S3c.

could be that the reverse isn´t syncronosized (written correct??)
so you shift to a gear that is before. On my Giulia I usually take the 3rd to stop the shaft.

hope you understand what I mean

When I bought mine from new I was advised to hook fifth to avoid the 'graunch'.
Always worked for me.

same here, told by 2 dealers when testing, always goto 5th then into reverse, makes it a much smoother and quieter 'crunch'..

When I was driving a Sag recently I was also told the trick is to pop it into third and then into reverse in order to avoid any painful graunching noises. It worked a treat and also works on my rather less exotic 306!

Noooooo! eek

Not 5th!!!! It's the weakest gear in the 'box.
It's only held on with a puny circlip.....

Use 3rd instead

The TVR handbook suggests to engage 5th before reverse. It doesn't matter what the temperature is, if you don't engage 5th or maybe 3rd or 1st then reverse will always crunch.

TVR technology!!!!!

I was told to use 5th on my 500 when I bought it but generally used 3rd and it works fine.
Straight into reverse is not an option

yes Definitely correct use 3rd, according to GearboxMan who re-con & uprate these Borg Warner T5 'boxes. 5th gear is the weakest link in many ways - I know from personal experience as 5th broke up rather noisily in my Cerbera on the M-way. rolleyes

Playing the devils advocate, why would the manual not recommend using 3rd instead of 5th then (from someone who has been using fifth for quite some time!) scratchchin

Hmmmmm! scratchchin Why would the manual recommend running in the engine in a certain way, when countless customers did as they said and still had a knackered engine for their troubles?!?!

I've worked extensively with these 'boxes in my capacity as a dyno. test inspector and you've got someone who re-conditions them for a living telling you what's for the best three posts up!

You want to use 5th - fine.....don't come whingeing on here if it all goes tits-up.......

At the risk of beng totally corrected by someone who know's what they're talking about, I thought the whole point was to engage the synchromesh to enable reverse to be selected. As such as the clutch is not released until the stick is in reverse surely it wouldn't matter which gear is used? I have always used 5th both in the Chim and now in the T2S but will use 3rd as a precaution following the earlier post. Any one got anything scientific?
