I've been trawling through the ad's for a Tuscan S to potentially replace my Chim 4.5.

There are a lot more Mk 1 cars around, and the Mk 2 cars appear to attract a higher premium. Is it worth trying to afford a Mk 2 car? What are the most significant differences between them?

Would a Mk 1 car with a re-built Mk 2 engine be as good a car?

Most significantly, the Mk 1 is more beautiful than the Mk 2, both externally and internally!!!

Agreed. Mk 1 is by far the better looking carbow and much better value for money. Seem to recall a similar thread on PH about Mk 1 against Mk 2punch.
Buy the latest Mk 1 you can and enjoycloud9.

I went through the same dilemma as you, and in the end had to have the MK1, the MK2 is supposed to be a more controllable ride, and a better build but the looks of the MK1... gotta go with lust on these cars! its like picking your women, its either a*se or chest sperm (I went for chest )

I'll agree that the mk 1 is an all time iconic sportscar design. But the mk 2 is no minger. I'm very happy with mine and have a computer full of photos of it already.

As for the differences between them it's hard to pin down because both cars evolved significantly during their production run. I'm told the later tuscans like mine have a Sagaris inspired set up with 255 tyres allround and bilstein shocks which are thought to be very good. The mk 2 steering is supposed to be slower too (it's still quick by ordinary standards) but it calms down the steering response and is known to make the car less twitchy.

I'm also told the S6 was at it's most ferocious around 2003 and a tuscan S from that time clocked 0-100 in 8.08 secs - astonishing - that's near F40 pace! The later cars like mine are thought to have had the wick turned down a little, presumably in the quest for durability. Certainly my Sagaris wouldn't rev beyond 7500 and I think earlier S6s would rev nearer 8000. They're still good for the ton in just under 9 seconds so they don't hang around. It's most likely a fair trade off.

The build of my mk 2 is genuinely good. No squeaks or rattles, even from the roof and rear window. But the mk 1 does have a raw edge that, like the styling, has been smoothed off for the mk 2. If you like your meat rare perhaps the mk 1 is the way to go but the later mk 2's are impressively polished.

That Tuscan S in 03 had a factory special engine. Only the 3.6's would rev to near 8000rpm, and IMHO revving beyond 7000rpm is not only pointless for power but will also wear the engine out much much quicker.

See Speed 6 section for loads more knowledge on that subject.

Consensus is that the design has not changed, just better quality of some of the parts. BHP on marketing paper changed but only to make it more realistic.

I have to agree, having owned a 4ltr and 4ltr s Mk1 the mk2 is of a better build quality all round, i must say though the POD was a fantastic design on the mk1. If only they made a full MK1 convertable now that would have been something.
A quick question for you all, why is a 2005 saggy worth more than a 2006 tuscan (s) convertable.

I've had 2 MK1s and up until recently did not like the MK2 front, rear, dashboard or lights. Having now seen a few in the flesh I'm actually taken by the design of both the convertible and targa. However, I have never liked the upgraded dashboard in the targa MK2. The dashboard in the convertible is the best out of all of them IMHO.

If they really have improved on the build quality then it's time to start looking. Well actually I already have :-)

Question is when can I order one of my own colour choice and spec ?

the later targas had the wavy convertible interior too. It's great, best thing is the mk 1 style three spoke wheel for spirited driving. Worst thing is I can't read the tops of the analog instruments.

But I'll not hear a word of mk 1 is better or vice versa. Tuscans are all brilliant and if I could I'd have one of each!

I could have got a MK2 when I bought last year. However, while both cars are great and are broadly the same in looks. Its the little things on the MK1 which lead my to favour the MK1 over the MK2.

I prefered the MK1, externally, lights, rear, smooth no spoiler boot (non S). Internally, that speedo POD is just an amazing work of art.

The MK2 lost out largley cos of the interior, a bit odd and at the time there where lots of posts about the speedo visability etc. Although I am told the MK2 is better build quality, I have not experienced it.

Both look great, but I went for a late MK1, 54 reg in fact. In terms of looks its great and build quailty is certainly better than the 2001 Tuscan I had before.

Cheers

All Tuscans are obviously great. I have a Mk1 and to me there's something very special about the design. The exterior is minimal and beautiful. One of the most beautiful cars ever designed. The interior is equally unique. TVR really seemed to have made an extra effort to make a bespoke look. Hardly anything inside is plastic, just the seat belt bits and the mirror. It's all turned and machined metal. The Mk1 must be the most bespoke interior of any TVR. When you sit in it you feel it was designed in an alternative reality.

I bought a well looked after Mk1 with an engine upgraded and rebuilt in 2005 and fitted Nitrons to sort the handling. It now looks amazing, goes very fast and handles like it always should have. Roof squeeks a bit though....

Mk 1 all day, I personally think they cocked the front up on the Mk 2 and took the aggression out.

I respect the team whom designed the body works on the Tuscan so much, I still think its way ahead of its time.

Wow - I never realised there was such a strong feeling pro-Mark 1.

I never bought a Mark 1, as I thought it was a bit strange - especially the cheesegrater grill - but as soon as the Mark 2 came out, I went for it.

Maybe I'm a bit too conventional, but I much prefer the curvy dashboard without the "pod", and I much prefer the covered headlights and more converntional grill on the S2 - I prefer the way the back lights are covered in too.

Each to his own, I guess - they are all damn amazing cars whichever one takes your fancy. I would have said get an S2, because you get a decent warranty, but I think we all know how valid that really is...

We may be seem biased to the Mk1 as there's a lot more Mk1 owners on here than Mk2 owners.

With regards to the cheese grater front I always thought this was a clever design for turning road kill into instant sausages when travelling at high speed.

Lol! I never realised it was a practical feature!!! Does it feed straight through to somewhere appropriately hot, so the roadkill gets perfectly cooked as you continue to drive along!!!

I think we should keep it secret how good the Mk2 really is, Yee the Mk1 is much better...
