Aargh! Yesterday I drove through Chelsea when out of nowhere some idiot threw an egg at my car. rage It landed on the main bonnet and left nasty marks. I guess I am lucky that glass fibre does not dent, but I now have an egg-shaped spot of tiny cracks in the paint. And that's only a week after the service bonnet and back of the car had been resprayed!

The cracks are tiny and you have to know they're there to notice, but since I know and therefore notice, I would like to get rid of them (without having another rather expensive and time-consuming respray). Does anybody know if there any good DIY solutions? Who would be a good specialist in London or Surrey?

If you have experience with this (with or without egg) then your advice would be very much appreciated!

Maybe the scratches are only in the top laquer surface.
If so I think it should be an easy repair.
Good luck

I polished it with Autoglym Super Resin Polish, but the cracks are white, which must be the primer showing through. Could some coloured (red) wax do the trick?

As a former SMART repairer I'm sorry to say that egg damage is surprisingly deep. Think of how tough bits of eggshell are if you bite on some in your food!

If it's a glancing blow on the bonnet it may not be too bad, but generally side on shots to the doors of cars do permanent damage.

A quick test is to fill up a small plastic bottle with water and gently pour over the scratch/damage, if it significanly reduces or even disappears completely under running water then the damage is in the lacquer, if not then I'm afraid it is well into the paint.

Unlikely you'd have much damage from the egg! Although saying that, the lacquer would be much softer if recently resprayed. Still, as far as i am aware, eggs don't contain much in the way of corrosive materials!

I think you'll find that the white bits in the crack/scratch are just dried polish! Try using a polish with more cut first, like one of the T-cut ones.

I would try to polish it out first. Definitely think you'll get a better result.

The cracks feel very rough (after polishing with Autoglym) so I don't think that they can just be polished out. Around the egg-shaped spot of cracks there are also two or three chips in the paint. The damage an egg can do is incredible. I'm still fuming about how it happened! furious

Thanks K! It was nice talking to you too. In the end it's nothing major, just frustrating as the whole thing was totally unnecessary. I'm still waiting for the Chips Away guys to get back to me and hopefully it'll all be sorted soon.

Have the police found and charged the criminals that did this?

No, unfortunately I never saw who did it. Was just driving along, minding my own business and BAM! Thought first somebody had thrown water, but when it did not run off the windscreen I stopped to have a look...

some little toe rag egged the back windows of my house the other day, as soon as i realised what the thud was I flew into a rage, grabbed an egg from the fridge and ran outside to egg them back!!!

unfortunately they were long gone. I do worry about the way my mind works sometimes though! smile

I have just seen an advertisement for next weeks "specials" in ALDI in Germany for paint damage repair materials.
I wont know what they are until next week but will check them out and let you know.

Excellent! I will drive to a Dutch town 15 minutes from the German border next week, so could pick it up then. So please do let me know when you know more!
