at my wits end, any help please

Hi all

I recently bought a 2000 Tuscan and unfortunately I live in Dublin where there are no dealers etc

I recently realised it was getting harder to put it into gear and over the course of a week I cannot select a gear from stationary so the only way of getting the car moving is to start it in gear and then it drives fine.

I took it to a local garage run by a mate and he said he needed to bleed the clutch as there was an airlock or something. Obviously getting to it was a nightmare so after an hour of fiddling he now says that it 100% definitely needs a new Hydraulic release bearing and the only way of getting to it to replace it is to remove the centre console to get to the clutch

2 questions

1) What exactly is a hydraulic release bearing - is it also called the slave cylinder?
2) Does he have to take off the centre console to do it

He's a friend of my brother in law so he's not ripping me off but I also don't want him pulling the car apart to f*ck it up

Sounds like he's talking about the thrust bearing.

Mines a 2000. I had a lot of work done after buying. I know they took the console out to do some electrics but you cant tell its been disturbed.
I didnt know that you need to do that to work on the clutch.

The hydraulic bit on gear box side ofthe clutch is the slave cylinder and if that needs doing you have to take the gear box out, this could not be the worst thing though as the fingers on the diapham on the clutch tend to break off, that will then need a new clutch.
Sorry to be a bit negative here but it seems like you could be in for a large bill.
There are quite a few threads on the clutch subject so why not put in a search under clutch and have a read.
I hope it is something else but doesn't sound like it.

I think you mean release bearing, if that is going it will just make one big rattle and it is quite rare for that to fail and stop the clutch working, also this would require the gear box to be taken off.

I've decided to take it to a dealer in Belfast and get it done properly. Better off in the long run and he can also reset my EFI warning on the dash too. Everybody in Dublin claims to be a TVR expert and most of them haven't got a clue what they are talking about

Bit of advice - don't go to the TVR Belfast dealer go to Torqueflyte in Ballygowan - all the NI TVRs go there as they have been working on TVRs for ages and were recognised by the TVR factory for services and warranty work.
