All, I've had my mark 1 Tuscan for nearly a year now and the only niggling little problem I continue to have is a gradual reduction in tick-over level. It goes back into the workshop each time, they charge a large fee for 'setting up the carbs', and within a month the problem starts to come back to haunt me. Anyone out there had a similar problem, if so, what is it,is it something I could rectify or are specialist tools required?
Apart from the as-fore-mentioned the cars an absolute animal to drive, and I love it more than the missus!

In anticipation

Thanks

CARBS, how old is it, is it an original Tuscan as anything from the late eighties will be injection and has throtle bodies, if it is a late Tuscan the idle adjustment can be got at from the passenger side, and is in the middle of the six cylinders, will require something like a 3mm allen key and an 8mm spanner.
If it the old original Tuscan then I haven't a clue.

Is it really a 1960's car ..

There is not much on your profile to give us a clue ..

Do you have mechanical knowledge to be messing with timing .. and carb jetting.

Do you know what a emulsion tube is..

A corrector jet..

FF for that..

OK - I have heard that the S6 has wear issues with the throttle bodies .. that can cause tick over and general running issues.

But, also at every service the throttle pots are re-syncronised (PC) to give a good tick over.

If the tickover and pickup is poor then like any multi throttle (6) set-up then they will need re-balancing.

It's a difficult job - get it wrong and it will be un-driveable.

So - to answer the question - no it's not DIY and you will probably need to keep paying the garage to do this.

I'm not saying this cannot be done but you will need to be very confident with multi throttle applications before doing this smile

exactly the same problem on my 2000 tuscan sp6,adjusted mine no problem but the revs seem to stick when im just touching the throttle which is annoying in traffic,i've been thinking that the throttle bodies are out of balance and from what has been said here maybe the case, also i read that you can buy replacement ones from somewhere (scotland i think).have to search the forums for that i think!!

I balanced them myself no problem, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't know what they are doing.

how did you go about balancing them? Is it the same method as the old twin carb set up (vacuum gauge etc)? or can it be done via the software?

Both! But don't ask me how, I just watch when my race mechanic does it.

Basically the engine is in two sets of three, the throtle cable is in the middle, start from there and get the two bodies either side taking in the same amount of air, then work out from there, making sure all the bodies are taking in the same amout of air, it is just like balancing the carbs up, I use the same flow meter.

Thanks for all the gen, appreciate it.
KEV1366 mentioned the rpm not returning to idle on release of the pedal; had that a few times myself and was told it was carb issues when I wrongly assumed a 'frayed' or sticky throttle cable.
Cutting to the chase, the warranty on the vehicle runs out within two months and if idling issues are rearing their ugly heads within weeks of having the carbs balanced by a TVR dealer do I have grounds for replacement throttle bodies? Or would they claim it's wear and tear? Somehow I believe it'll be the latter! Guess I'm gunna have to become an expert in speed six carb balancing then. I have a set of vacuum gauges (only 4 unfortunately but sure I could source a couple more) from balancing bike carbs so I understand the basics, just need the intricacy's from you 'fonts of knowledge'. There were snippets of a procedure in your replies, anyone got any more gen to help me?
In anticipation, thanks again!

That's all if a Speed Six had carbs, test out the place where you got it from and ask them if they would replace a body it it had gone, mines now done 46k and never had a replacement.

Spark plugs in cylinders 5+6 (2 nearest windscreen) in my car are black.
Check for spark and gap size - all ok.

Could this be related to throttle body balancing??

Other 4 plugs are clean in comparison.
