Need some help please. I had left the car parked after a short journey and steam began bellowing from the engine bay and water appeared on the ground. When I checked the temp, it had rose to 114 C. Now the car is never very good at keeping the temp down. Mean temp is about 77 C when driving at 70mph, but it has never rose this high. Idle temp is noprmally 96 C. Could this be a new radiator, new fan or just me not keeping an eye on the coolant levels often enough?
Help needed please before I go to a garage.
Thanks in advance!!!

Were the fans running? They should cut in at about 90 and 94 IIRC. Maybe they are not working?

Yeah they were running, but they have little or no effect.

Hi alz,

My running temp is around 79 and idling around 97. I recently had some problems and had fan repairs to correct so I am sure these temps are good.
Yours sounds correct up until your recent problem.
I am sure you notice the temp climb to around 96 when your idling but if it holds at that temp, the fans (both) must have been working correctly.
If you now see an over temp problem, one of the temp sensors may have failed.
The sensor that kicks in the second fan and holds the temp down to 96ish is located on the engine block on the off side of cylinder 4 or 5 (forgot) sometimes and quite often it is a bad connection to the sensor.
You will need to lift of the airbox to access. Dont forget the two clips under the box. A new sensor is only about 30 quid.
Check the connections and water level and run the engine to see if fan kicks in. If not should be new sensor.

Good luck,
Tony

It overheated again in Edinburgh. Had to stop twice before I left the town to let it cool down. Not good. The temp was going up at a phenominal rate.
It seams to be the sensor. Which is a bit of a nightmare. I'm getting continuity accross the fuses. Will see if I can get the bonnet of tomorrow if someone gives me a hand.
Thanks and I will let you know how I get on.

Hi alz,
There is a Land Rover sensor that fits. So if you are having problems getting one, thi Rover one comes on a little lower temp.
I gave the info on another blog. I will look it up and come back.

I might be missing something here but doesn't the ECU control the fans? Surely if you have actually had an overheat situation where it threw out steam then the coolant did actually overheat? Maybe I have mis-read your OP but are you sure that both fans came on and have you now refilled the system? My Tusc tends to run at about 65 at motorway speeds and cycles between 93 and 96 when warmed up and idling.

Once you get the sensor sorted, if it is mis-reading, you might want to replace the rad cap too since it has blown once already. Or did you think that the coolant came from somewhere other than the cap?

Good luck with it

Andy

Ah...I just re-read this again. Didn't realise there was a separate temp sensor for the 2nd fan - I guess if the 2nd fan didn't cut in then the temps just kept rising, right? Does Power's new SP6 Eprom bring both fans on at the same time now, does anyone know?

Well it did throw steam twice from the rad cap at up to 122 C. I have re filled the system, but will have to check the sensor.
Although as it is seamingly reading correct will this benefit? How does the fan cut in operate?
Thanks for getting the part number though. I have a land rover dealer not far from me and will give them a call.
It is all happening today. The door sensors are going hay wire so swapped the ECU's and problem persisting, so looks like new window sensors inside the door panels and the background lights on my speedo have went of. This should be an easy find.
The joys of tuscan ownership are upon me!! Good way to learn about the workings of a car I suppose. Just thankfully this website exists!!!

do not let it overheat. The head gasket is iffy enough without giving it too much more stress.

Joolz does an exchange ECU chip with the fan on speeds at lower temperatures, see his website.

I can't work out how to get onto his website. How do you find it? That sounds fantastic though.

check you also have not got an airlock. The standard system in good order will cope fine to keep the car cool, it's just it runs too close to the brink of being too hot and also the engine bay gets too hot which leads to others under bonnet problems. Cycling the fans earlier helps all that.

That's definetely my thoughts too. Thanks for that. I will get a look and see if I can get it sorted.
Thanks again for getting back so quickly.
