... that is the question

whether 'tis nobler to make noises of outrageous proportions

or to go quietly into the night...

your thoughts and experiences ladies and gentlemen please...

by the way it's going to be done by peninsular, experiences and views of their pipes welcome

whether 'tis nobler to make noises of outrageous proportions - Yes Tis Tis Its biggrinyes

As a wise man once said, tis much nobler to be load and proud than to be meek and bleak

Just make sure you get the fuelling right after decatt, I had a new chip put in

Mine done by automedon, so cannot comment on peninsula

Yep, decat is definitely worth giving a go, especially when combined with aftermarket cans. The noise on hard acceleration is earsplitting and the inhalation/growl when you change gears above 4.5Krpm gives you goosebumps! Lots more crackling, popping and banging too - with the roof off it is a symphony hehe The car tends to rev up and down a little easier/freer too and there would likely be a power increase of around 5bhp too - dyno/remap would capitalise on this though I think.

I had the "decat eprom" from Power fitted and have since had it replaced with the most recent Red Rose Eprom from Dom - to be honest, the decat chip doesn't do much at all really. Some recommend a re-map after decatting, which kind of makes sense, but I haven't gone down that road as yet. Not noticed any issues with fueling myself.

Go for it!

thing is, it crackles and pops like a goodun already (I have CCC's fitted to spectacular effect). my only concern (I really must be getting older!) would be too much noise during a long motorway cruise. then again it's likely to spit flame out the back without the cat and as we know all fast cars should do that.

yeah, I don't know if mine spits any flames as yet, must check that out someday. Mine is definitely louder at motorway speeds but not so that it annoys me or causes me any problems on a long drive, and I tend to drive a lot with the window down - much quieter with the windows up.

If you decat its worth putting active silencers on so that under 4000rpm its a pussy cat over that the valve opens for a straight through experience. They work very well on track days.

Edited to say they make long distance and motorway driving a joy..

Edited edited to say the manufactures also claim they increase torque whether that's true or not who knows..

....and where can you get these "active silencers" to fit a Tuscan? I imagine they'd be quite an involved and expensive thing to fit. At a minimum they'll need a power supply and some sort of link into the ECU.

No not at all expensive and no electrical gadgets, they work off the exhaust pressure, on my t350 they open up at around 4000rpm. All you will need to do is get a good metalworker who works in stainless to fit them so as they can be removed. They cost £90.00 each without fitting.

Decat update: I picked up the car sans cats on Saturday. I had to drive about 150 miles. The current set up is Carbon cans with peninsular's decat.

My honest opinion is that it's way over the top. I shall be fitting standard exhausts back on to see what it sounds like then. Having then tried all the possible permutations I'll put the cats back in and CCCs on if that sounds better.

Either way it needs to be a lot less quieter than it is now. More importantly the quality of the noise has got a lot worse at all but tickover. In fact tickover sounds great but that's it. From there on it gets ridiculously raspy and metallic, like the exhaust is loose or something. It may well sound great at 7000rpm but I suspect you need to be several miles away to judge it. From inside the car its so loud it's just deafening. I wound down the windows once to roar past a long wall and it genuinely hurt my ears. The stereo is useless and I suspect overtaking wildlife and old people is a very unpleasant experience for them. The pops and bangs have become full-on explosions and shake the car as if I'd just driven over a pothole. Ridiculous. I feel I've ruined a fabulous car. The cats plus CCCs was a terrific combination and sounded, qualitatively much better than standard while being more than loud enough.

The thing is if it had 2000 horsepower I could sort of justify the noise but at 350+ bhp it's just over the top and smacks a bit of the boy in town who's desilenced his scooter. It's just annoying and doesn't really impress anyone over 5. Overtaking was embarassing frankly. I had to creep past using as little throttle as possible to keep the noise down but an oncoming car would mean a burst of full throttle and, well, I must have looked like I felt - a complete pratt. As mentioned fine if I'd disappeared off into the horizon at warp 9 but to creep past making that sort of racket must have been a real case of all show and no go. For the record I don't think the car is in any way faster than standard either.

I want my old car back! (after a bit of video footage of course!)

Same kinda thing with my sagaris Johnny;

Had new clutch and found cats melted, couldn't put them back like that.

Put some decat pipes as quick fix.

Result its 4dbA louder so will fail some trackdays.

I saw an improvemnt in torque I think, but that probably down to melted cats.

However, normal driving without too much throttle is lot more civilised in the car. (and cooler too)

But with wide throttle openings it rasps and is a bit silly.

On the run down especially down banks it's pops bangs and farts at 3krpm and massive back fire and flames sometimes(burning the paintwork as well).

It's not for me; so i'm looking for a quiter solution cheaper than new cats,

Thinking of blue flame cans with dB killers

My Red Rose car with de-cats and CCC's is spot on. But it has the smaller exhaust bore, so maybe on the S cars it is just too loud!

My is certainly too loud for some trackdays, but when cruising below 3000rpm it's not much louder than with the cats still in.

Certainly comparing mine to a S car with cats and CCC's and mine with cats and CCC's the S car was louder and deeper sounding.

I've had mine done for about a year now and still love it to bits, I know what you mean about the metallic deep clangy sound on full throttle when I first drove the car I thought it sounded better before and was a bit gutted too but the crackles and explosions made up for it.

I've got the standard cans with sleeves and a full
de-catt, in a tunnel I can barely contain myself hehe

I would hold on for a few months to see if you can get used to it.

Mine has decat & CC's too & I think it sounds fantastic! Quite boomy when accelerating but not too noisy when cruising on motorways etc. but sounds cloud9 when floored.

as neither of you have Tuscan 'S's with the bigger bore pipes, I can only imagine that's the difference. That or you're both now deaf!

I have decatted both my Tuscan and the Wifes Tamora with my own design of decat pipes. The Tuscan also has CCC's and the Tam has Racing green sports pipes. Both cars have standard bore exhausts. The sound of the Tuscan is raw and very raspy. It was the loudest TVR at the BNG this year coming in at 129 dba yikesears. I know its not everybodies cup of tea, but I am used to it now and quite like it. The noise during accelleration is epic.

The Tam has a much deeper tone. Almost V8 like and in my opinion sounds the better of the two cars.

I think the reason for this is the design of the Tuscan Exhaust. The spigots that the cans clamp to extend into the corner "silencers" (which are just empty cans) approximately 2". This is inefficient and causes the tone to be very raspy.

The tam exhaust is much more direct, using bends rather than 90 degree angles to change direction. The Tam exit pipes also incorporate small mufflers.

If I get a bit of time in the new year I intend to redesign the back end of the Tuscan Exhaust to incorporate small mufflers instead of the corner silencers. I will use bends rather than 90 degree corners and hopefully I will achieve the same sound as the Tam. Afterall, it will then be basically the same exhaust system. If my theory works, installing the original cans onto the Tuscan should bring the noise level down to trackday standards.

In terms of performance, the Tuscan does seem to be a bit quicker than before. It will shortly be going to TVR Power for a bespoke remap (done by JR) to ensure fuelling etc is correct.
