I love the tuscan, fantastic looking car but not quite as reliable as i would like. I used to own a e46 M3 and now have a 987 Boxster S but what i really want is a tuscan but id need it for my everyday car (a problem if unreliable obviously) and was wondering could you put the straight six engine from an e46 m3 into a tuscan, would it fit? is it possible?
Its just you can buy a fairly oldish tuscan for very cheap and if you could get your hands on a low mileage bmw engine it could be abit of a cool project. Just a thought.

I run mine every day, 90 miles a day, 450 per week. Apart from the huge fuel bill (and regular servicing - that's got to be good for it!) I've had little to no problems. OK 2 problems then, the battery went (don't they all?) and the fuel pump gave up the ghost (thought it might have been a relay issue - both were changed). Other than that, running sweet as a dream.

interesting idea, e46 M3 has 340hp IIRC ? very few SP6 engines actually make the specified 360/380/whatever number TVR made up on the day... so it probably wouldnt be underpowered, utterly different driving characteristics though.
having said all that, Im no expert, but it probably wouldnt fit, the SP6 is a very tight fit as it is.
I run mine every day and apart from the false EFI fault that shows every now and then nothing apart from servicing costs...
I was told by a TVR service manager that the best thing for the tuscan is to use it every day ...

Make sure you buy the right one!
Engine rebuild to the lastest spec .. look at the speed six forum to find the best rebuilders ( Mine was carried out a TVR Power)

Don't believe all the negative hype.....there are good ones, there are bad ones. Same as every other car, as can be verified by someone who I know who didn't even make it home from the dealership when picking up his E46 M3. I could be very wrong, but I think I saw somewhere that the M3 lump doesn't go into the Tuscan due to the slant angles of the blocks being different....????. I could just be dreaming that though, so don't take it as gospel. Even if it does physically fit, think about accessing for servicing, i.e. where are all the ancilliaries and servicable items will be in relation the chassis and other fixed points. You don't want a regular £100 job to be a £1000 one because you have to take the whole lump out.
Seriously though, if you do go for a Tuscan, keep it as it is. You won't be getting the full experience, and surely that's the whole point for cars like that?

have just bought an early Tuscan with only 21500 miles on the clock. Had a problem with the slave cylinder as it had done very few miles. Since then have done almost 2000 miles in six weeks. What a car. Even done a 280 mile run round scotland in one day ( I live in Edinburgh). Never fails to start but does have a slight issue with oil pressure when very hot. Dont go botching a different engine into the TVR. The speed six is the soul of the car.

Owners of BMW E3xs between 1993 and 1998 were not too impressed with BMW reliablity with numerous engine (M60 and M52s) replacements at under 30k miles caused by the "Nikasil Issue" .Its just you can buy a fairly oldish tuscan for very cheap and if you could get your hands on a low mileage bmw engine it could be abit of a cool project. Just a thought.

Jaguar had the same problems with thier 4.0 v8 in the early (pre 2000) XJR and XK8's, fuel is fixed in the UK now, as was the problem in the later 4.2 v8s.
