Hi guys, looking for some feedback on a Tuscan Im looking at on Friday

2002/02
22k miles fsh
2 owners
GTS Blue with Portland Trim
No Air Con
No record of a engine rebuild
on sale at TVR main dealer with 12 months warranty
Advertised as near perfect paintwork and interior
£18k

Appreciate Id get cheaper privately but looking for some peace of mind. What do you think, seems a reasonable deal from a TVR dealer but am a bit concerned by the lack of engine rebuild - should I be? Cheers

Peace of mind?

Get *in writing* exactly what the warranty will cover, including specifically in writing an engine rebuild.

Insurance companies when given a bill for £6000 traditionally try the best they can not to pay up - and one of the reasons is 'wear and tear' which is impossibly wide and also failure due to design fault.

Engine rebuilds are technically both of these combined...

For that money I'd want a post 2005 rebuild (possibly still in warranty)

Look for recent clutch as well.

Think about anything you might want to do to the car as well...

If it 'needs' 18 inch wheels - £1k, nitrons, £1.3k, if it needs a service allow £1k.

These things soon add up when you look to buy a Tuscan and maybe worth looking for one with it already done..

Theres loads of decent looking ones on PH at the moment - use the buyers guide as well.

I would rather pay an extra 1 or 2 and get one with an engine rebuild, i believe 02/03's were the last of the old parts - it seems ultimately important, its the only car where people boast about that when selling! it really is a selling point even if you dont need one during ownership.

it costs to keep them in top condition, hopefully the more the previous owner has spent the less you will.

but there is no guarrentees
& life is too short to worry

Its not just WMS. There is a genuine issue with all warranties and the S6 engine. They generally want to class the finger follower cam issue as 'wear and tear' and not a breakdown, thus excluding it from cover.
It is very (too) easy for warranty companies to do this due to the nature of the problem. After all, the cam follower does wear due to oil starvation and engine warming up procedures not being followed.

I have always avoided warranties for my Tuscan. Instead, i keep a 5k fighting fund in a deposit account and bank the interest. Self underwriting with very little stress......

That doesn't sound too bad for a 2002 model, some people say a 20k car with no signs of engine problems is a keeper as speed 6 is a good one, other recommend buying a rebuilt one. think a lot of it is going to be luck of the draw on the engine front, get it inspected by a independent maybe just to be sure it's exactly like it should be.

Even if an engine has already had a rebuild it does not mean that it won't need another one. Surely an engine that has never had any problems is preferable.

Depends how new the engine is......
However, you have hit the nail right on the nub of the debate. Rather depends which side of your toast is buttered.

Problem is lots of people report engines not doing many miles but rebuilt ones seem to last better. as you say luck of the draw but a recent build with a warranty from the builder is a big bonus.

I think it sounds like a good buy for that price???
Mine is a 2002 (02) and cost a lot more than that just 3 months ago. Mine's not had a re-build and it runs like a dream............however you don't know what's round the corner so I've kept an "engine" fund to one side if the worst should happen.

Hi, yes I did - it was at David Gerald but unfortunately they had sold it on the Thursday and not rung me to tell me so had a wasted journey!!!

Just agreed price of £17.5k for my Tuscan & it is a peach. Only accepted this as the balloon payment is due in May & I need the money for house move & baby on the way.

I will be back & he's promised to look after him & not let him out in bad weather.

I think the debate about rebuilds could go on and on. Just had my 12,000 mile service done on my '01 Tuscan at Dreadnoughts (even though it's just over 11k on the clock) and was told the engine is in superb condition, no signs of wear or damage. Great news :-) New n/s engine mount, heater sorted, timing adjusted, it's sounding so sweet now !

Not an expert but I'd say between £20-£24k (Private Sale...bit more (£2-3k) if through a dealer with a warranty) depending upon condition. How bad are the stone chips on the bonnet?? Get underneath and check the outriggers and chassis in general, any sign of rust would affect the price. And don't trust waxoyl...it hides a multitude of sins.....so rub it off and see what's it's like underneath...It's already done 23k miles so if no signs of problems, no reason to think it won't do another 20k. I think the fact it's had a new clutch is good...'cos it wouldn't have gone much longer.
