immobiliser socket

GOD, its me again!!(dont laugh)when I get in the car,and before i put the key in the ignition, do I have to stick the little black thing on my keys into the immobiliser socket on the dash,I have done and the lights go out, I have also started car without putting it in the socket.

Hi Lynn,
If the car is already locked, when you press the button on your key fob you unlock the car and disable the immobiliser. You don't need to use the little rectangular black fob thingy. If you need to disarm the immobiliser when you are sitting in the car then you can just press the key fob button, you should then hear the fuel pump prime, perhaps hear the heater control flap motor whirring too (on my MKI the red oil lamp in the dash lights up too) etc, etc and you are ready to go.
The only time I've had to use the black stick is when I left my bluetooth earpiece in the dash switched on - it was interfering with the signal from the fob to the immobiliser.....had me scratching my head for a while that one did!

I think the early models had a separate key and fob so maybe the black stick slot was in case you lost your fob....not sure to be honest...red glow said:

It is a back up incase the battery on the fob goes flat, how you get into the car is for another day. Dont worry about asking questions, i have owned tvrs for 8 years and am ALWAYS asking silly questions. Best of luck with your new toy........... Gordonred glow said:

So to clarify the little black stick does the same as the key but without relying on the fob battery?
I hate unnecessary stuff on my key chain - is there no point in me carrying it around?? Could it be stored elsewhere for emergency use?

I don't know if this has been posted before, I did a quick search but found nothing, so here is a word of warning for all you intrepid travellers intending to use a cross channel ferry.
We had a brief visit to France last week. Boarded the ferry ok from Dover, went in with the lorries, didn't want to risk the ramps. All ok but when I went to unlock the car (Tuscan).......nothing, no response from the key fob. We were right at the front in the middle & most of the lorries had a job squeezing past.
A crew member from the bridge came down & after I explained what the problem was....couldn't get in the car, he suggested that the ship's radar might have interfered with the immobilizer & shut it down said it had happened before to 'one of those'. Apparently the owner had it fork lifted off the ferry
I had to break in, using the prescribed method alarm going full blast, put the immobilizer fob into the slot, drove about 400yds, stopped the car, unlocked it from the inside, locked & unlocked it again just to make sure, put the bits back together & off we went.
I'll leave you to guess what we did on the way back!!
Had a great time in France........the Tuscan was...well, you know

so...yes very useful.....hope this makes sense...had a few
